is your employer the us govt't? If not, i'm wondedring why your employer would need to monitor you. Did you buy the computer or is it their property?

And if you log into their server, then yeah, i'd think they could monitor your use while connected.

There's a variety of ways they could do it. If they want to monitor keystrokes, they can use a software or hardware keylogger. They could also monitor your traffic with a packet sniffer (e.g., Wireshark or Ethereal) or use web proxies to monitor where you go out to with your browser. The trick is.. don't give them a reason to snoop.

In environments where I can't enable a VPN (encrypted connection) I use my blackberry to surf and that puts me on the cell phone network rather than the local system network. If you want more how tos or how it would be done, ask. It's an area I've specialized in for the last 15 years (more on the how to break in side but generally it's the same).

Seems like a hell of a lot of effort on their part unless they hand you a computer with software already installed for you to work from home on. Anything is possible, but to target a home computer and try to break through fire walls, and common spyware catchers, spam eaters, anti-virus etc. Seems very unlikely.

I'd be more woried about a pissed off ex-wife with a PI than the goverment, the goverment uses the FBI to do it's background checks. They call you family, your old teachers, your scout master, check criminal data bases, ask lots of stupid questions and make you do personality tests, but they don't care if you surf pron in your free time.

Al,

Don't worry, they don't care about all your fishing pictures with the photoshop-enhanced rainbow trout.

Just to be clear, I'm not an employee yet, and am concerned about my home system.
To actually get into your home system (keyloggers, remote vulnerabilities, etc.), they'd either need a warrant or your permission. It's more likely that they'd look at your internet history via publicly available records (google search, etc.). It's conceivable that they could get access to your browsing history through your ISP, depend on what is logged and how cooperative the ISP is.

If I were you, I'd be more concerned about the investigators coming across nervous posts like the one above.

Don't worry about it (unless ye have something ye shouldn't and give them a reason to suspect it. If they snooped on yer computer, they'd need a warrant as already stated, which would make it a load easier to simply google ye up. IF they take the trouble of doing so.

If I were you, I'd be more concerned about the investigators coming across nervous posts like the one above.

Yeah, some people in the government don't play by the rules. For a background investigation, though, I doubt they'd cross that line.

I worked part time a few years back for some people who had a business and they gave me a laptop to use and they had a program that let them see every single keystroke, web site, etc. I ever used. How did I know? They told me this months before I ever went to work with them.

It would be unlikely that the Employer, gov't or not, would monitor your home network. It's a matter of having a reason. That said, the NSA and other organizations already monitor all networks in the US (the old tool used to be Carnivore and I've forgotten what they call the new one) for potential hints at cyber terrorism and others. In reality, you are more at risk for bots and other malware looking for your credit card, SSN/SIN or other identifiers than the gov't wondering how much pr0n you surf each night. ;)

Most positions, secure positions, in the govt you will sign and agreement that allows them these kind of priviledges ie access to your ISp etc. When you go to work for the govt, you agree to Big Brother looking over your shoulder.
