Let me start by giving props to Greg who sent this (as well as a few other beauties) to me last week as part of the Super Bowl squares winnings.

Snipped and toasted, which gave forth aromas of cedar and spice.

Overall, the cigar did not change much as far as the flavor profile: Lots of cedar, earth tones, and walnuts. Just as Romeos always provide notes of orange peel, I usually get an almost bitter influence of walnuts from Partagas. A hint of some spice as well…Possibly white pepper.

The burn was fantastic…No corrections or re-lights necessary. The ash was solid and dark grey, and the burn line was very sharp; indicating possible age (Greg? What year was this?!) and definitely a great wrapper choice.

I have a few other boxes of Partagas in my humi (Serie D #3 EL ’01, and Serie P #2 ’04) but there was something about the way this cigar delivered a consistent flavor profile from start to finish; intensifying as it went along…Very well blended and constructed.

Great smoke!

Clint, that was a Partagas de Partagas No.1 from 1999....

Still, a great smoke though. Nice review too!
And I was about to ask if it was the varnished one...
Thanks for the review, though, mate!

Had my first 898 a month ago, Clint. As you wrote here, I felt the 898 strength lay in its consistency from first puff to last. I missed the joy of aromatic evolution (and the roller's "kiss" near the end,) but the initial flavor and fragrance were enough to sustain the expereince at a high level. Didn't strongly feel it was worth the premium price (equal to about $24 U.S.) ... but then, I'm finicky enough to believe only a handful of Cubans actually are worth their asking price.

the 898 is one on my list of hope to try someday. most of the parti's i've had have been 4's so i am curious as to how they compare.

This review was for a Partagas de Partagas No.1 (see post #3 and #6), not an 8-9-8. It was a case of mistaken identity.

Maybe Clint can change the title.

Both Party 898V's and Partagas De Partagas No.1's are excellent cigars. The Partaga Lonsdale is also a winner.

Too bad only the 898V is only one in current production anymore.:sadcry:
