Thanks all!!

Well Im taking a bit of a different step than most. Im going to a community college in Mammoth Lakes, CA. there are less than 200 students at the school.

My reasoning for doing it is because I love fishing, Mammoth has world class trout fishing. I love hunting and there is great hunting. I love snowboarding and there is world class snowboarding. Just great all around outdoor life.

Also I've lived in a stupid little bubble in south orange county all my life and I really can't handle it anymore so i decided that whats better than moving to my favorite place!
Congrats!!!

But get real my friend. CC in Mammoth...joke at best unless you will be be a world class guide. Head up to Wyoming or Montana. You graduated in Laguna Beach, CA. An area with high net worth individual dependents. I'm sure most of your buddies are heading to real schools. Go to a real school and get a real degree. Am I busting your balls? Yes I am. It took me 10 years to get my degree. Ski racing, helicopter skiing, hiking, rock climbing, booze, golf, a stripper 1st wife, more women, the Army, and everything in between. Go to a real school and buckle up young man.

Aw c'mon Pings! I work at a community college and it's one of the highest rated schools in the state. 90% of the credits are transferrable to most four year Uni's and the cost is fractional. Bottom line, when you graduate with your Bachelors from the prestigious University the diploma in no way says where you spent your first 2 years. As a parent it really is the most fiscally responsible way to go. Well unless one considers the military!

I say dont give up the chance to go to a 4 year school for fishing. After school, you can fish/hunt for another 60+ years, snowboard for another 20+.

There are plenty of schools not in the OC

I have attended a highly rated, private university and am presently attending a community college. The instructors at my community college are all highly motivated and love what they do. Our instructors are personally invested in the success of their students. There are few extracurricular distractions. We have a very focused, "get the job done" attitude that is refreshing. My experience at the university was that most instructors were burned out. The faculty spent far too much time on faculty politics. The student body was too distracted with all of the "college experience" of sports, activities and partying. At community college the students are focused on learning and getting on with their lives. The instructors take the time to get to know us as students and follow our progress. I plan to take as many courses at community college as I can. Our local "state" university costs twice as much as the community college. The four year schools have outrageous fee structures to supplement their tuition costs. Like Mike said, when you get that Bachelor's degree it will have the name of a university on it, not a community college. In my state, any state funded university has to accept the credits from any state funded junior college or community college, except in the case of developmental classes.

When I said "a real school", I was not discrediting community colleges. I was referring to schools that stress on an education. I've already told my son he will be attending a community college after he graduates. (my oldest son is almost 13)...but not one hundreds of miles away in resort town.

Excellent. I went to school in Flagstaff, Az for the same reason. I like the outdoors fishing, hunting and hiking. It was a great experience and I managed to pull an MBA in 5 and a half years. Mammoth is a great town in the eastern Sierra and surrounded by fishing. Put in two years, get a great base and love where you are then hit the bigger school. First two years are all basic stuff that have to be done. Why not do it some place beautiful. See you in the fall dude flyfishing Rush and Hot Creeks.

Do I hear Aaron saying "Gee, guys, thanks for the advice but I NEVER ASKED FOR ADVICE DAMMIT I'VE ALREADY MADE UP MY MIND" ? If worst came to worst, a year or two in Mammoth may slow his career plans by a year or two.
