Hey guys, I had my humidor seasoned and thought everything was going great for a few months, but the other day I noticed mold on my sponge and 1 cigar. So I have cleaned out the humi and recalibrated the piece of garbage hygrometer that came with it. I'm still not satisfied that it is working properly so my cigars are sitting in the fridge enclosed in an airtight plastic bag. I just ordered a digital hygrometer which should be here in a few days, along with 2 of the 1 ounce sticks of heartfelt beads. Is there a better way to store my 20 or so sticks in the meantime or should I keep them where they are?

I actually haven't got the beads, I have the gel crystals right now with the 50/50 mix. I put everything I have into a ziplock and sucked out as much air as possible then put it in the fridge but no nothing to add humidity. I think I should have everything by end of next week.

I think you should not have to have them in the fridge if you put them in a airtight bag with a water pillow. Did you notice any other mold?

Oh I know, the sponge is history. Those pillows are hard to find, there is only one cigar store in my area, i will see if he has them in stock tomorrow, but if the cigars were over humidified I don't know if a pillow is necessary. Of course the cigar with the mold on it was the most expensive, My bolivar gold medal. But i wiped it down and I am hoping that after i get the heartfelt beads going and the digital hygrometer setup i can then get the humi to a proper RH.

When you go to your local store, see if they have Boveda packs. If you get one of those and a good tupperware container that has a good seal, that will be all you need for temporary storage of your cigars while you get your other situation straightend out.

I'm curious, why did you place your cigars in the fridge? I would get them out of there. The lower the temp. the lower the rh. They are going to dry out even if they are in an airtight bag.

Because the RH was too high to begin with, and i read if there is very little air in there it shouldn't affect them too much. Where does the moisture go when it's in an airtite bag?

I just went out and bought a 10 dollar digital thermometer/hygro and stuck it in a calibration bag. If it is accurate it will tell me the humi RH and maybe I'll be lucky and can put everything back in the humi before I go to bed tonight.

That would be your best alternative until you are ready to put them back in your humidor!

Take them out of the fridge, leaving them in there for a week or more will reduce their RH for sure. Take the advise the Tuba Dude gave you.

I appreciate the offer but I think my beads will get here before the pillows since I am across the border. I'll take them out of the fridge

I am not a meteorologist, but as I understand it, it is relative humidity because the humidity will change depending on the temperature. That's why our skin dries out when it gets colder. I understand your thought process, but such wide swings in temp and rh is not good for the cigars. That is why even when I get a new box of cigars from a local store I let them sit for a few months so they can rest and get to a consistant rh.

Good luck getting this straightened out.

I let my cheapie hygro sit in the humidipak for about 5 hours and it was reading within 1/2%. So I stuck it in my humi over night. Right now humi is at 73% and 71F so i will add 10 cigars and check it again tonight to see if the reading is still stable. Personally I like 70% for smoking so if my sticks are a little dry the humi should drop a little. I will add 10 more tomorrow if everything seems to be in order.
Thanks for the advice guys. Once I get the beads I'm hooping i won't have to worry about mold again.

Don't sweat the beads, pillows or anything else for now. With mold growing it's very unlikely you need to add any more humidity, so just leave them in a plastic bag in a cool dark place for the next week or two until you have a stable humidor to move them into. If your humidor is too wet try putting Damp Rid in it to bring it down. Good luck and if your cigars are overhumidified remember to bring the down slowly so as not to spit wrappers. Leave them in the plastic bag and put them in the humidor with a little bit of the bag unzipped for the first several days.

Good luck

Remember, the more cigars you have in the humi the easier it will be to maintain a steady number. Listen to Tuba. Temp swings to cigars are like kryptonite to superman.

I agree with that process 100%, I just don't wait quite that long, usually two weeks....no matter how bad I want to smoke one you gotta let them rest!

I personally like to keep mine in the 65-68% range, all of my cigars smoke allot better when they are dryer....but that's just me my friend!
