I just got a 125 stick humidor last week and have been proceeding with the break in period. I prefer to use onlt distilled water in it, I heard the PG is not that great. But anyway my humidity is at 90 RH and I am worried about mold. i took the sponge out and have only the humidifiers left in there. What else can I do to lower this atleast to 80 so I can get my cigars in there?

I'm sure Ron will have a good answer for you. That seems really high. I might take the humi system out and get a gel jar or two, or perhaps some humi beads.

I will try the test tonight. I figured the humidity is high due to the fact that I had 3 humidifiers in it plus the sponge. I made the mistake of wiping the wood down because that is what the directions said, but now I regret doing it. I did only get the humidor 3 days ago as well. So I am still trying to break it in, but I would like to stabilize it soon. My little humidor is full and I have another 30 sticks that need to go in asap.

You defintaely want to season it (when you wiped the water in the inside and put the humidifiers in) but having 3 in there without no cigars is why it's so high. Take all of then out and tort it come down to around 70-73 and put your smokes in. When it gets down to around 65 put ONE humidifier back (beads/ gel are better though)

Ok, I am going to do that. I figure that it should be pretty well conditioned by this point, between the sponge and humidifiers. Thanks for all the help.

Go get a Xikar Jar ($5 bucks) from your local B&M that will help with guess work as well...

90%!! I have never heard of anyone having 90% humidity lol, like others said, take all humidity devices out, wait until it goes down to the mid 60s, then add some humidification, the best example being beads... Throw the sponge away while you are at it, that is asking for trouble...

Yea 90%, but the only reason is because I wiped everything down and had the humidifiers in there plus the sponge for the initial break in period.

One thing you may want top watch out for is cracks when it gets that high, too much humidity too fast, in or out, causes cracking...

Take the sponges out and let it dry out with your sticks in there for awhile. I have a 600ct that was at 80% so I took all my beads out and let it go...the deal was I had a bunch of wet sticks in there causing the RH to be high...everything evened out in about 3 weeks...still have very few beads in there along with 3 Oust fans for circulation.

Wouldn't you like to know?
I may be a bit of a hack here but I find it nearly impossible to stabilize an empty humidor. I would drop to one humi element and fill it with cigars and see how that is after a day. And don't discount pg solution as it had been a staple for many years.

You also might want to leave it open to let some of the intial wipedown water evaporate. I'm not sure how much you used, but it takes very little to season!

In the mean time, a ziplock with a water pillow works just fine. It might not keep them perfect, but they'll be fine.

at this point, take out all the extra humidification devices. just leave the 1 one there that belongs in there. dont put your cigars in there yet. close the lid and leave it for 2 dyas. then check the reading. dont keep opning it up. just check once every 2 days. once the humidity level goes down to 70, add your cigars and recharge your humidification. do that first and if you run into any more trouble, lmk

Thanks Ron. I am going to give that a shot. The humidor came with 3 humidifiers for it, but I will use only 1 so I can drop it down. Thnaks brothers for all of your help as well.
