Although announced early in the year at the Festival del Habano, the annual limited-edition cigars from Habanos, S.A. are never ready until the second half of the year. Right on cue, the Cubans confirmed the three Edicion Limitada entries for 2009 last week, noting that they will be shipped in the “second semester of the year.” The class of 2009:

Bolivar Petit Belicosos: 5 inches by 52 ring, offered in boxes of 25; this is the first time that a Bolivar brand has been offered in a Limitada.

H. Upmann Magnum: 48: 4 3/8 inches by 48 ring, completing the trio of “Magnum” sizes in this brand with the Magnum 46 and Magnum 50 introduced earlier; to be offered in slide-lid boxes of 25.

Romeo y Julieta Duke: (5 1/2 x 54) reported as a new size for Habanos and offered in boxes of 10.

All of the leaves used for Edicion Limitada cigars are required to have had two years of aging, creating a more subtle blend, but still in keeping with the well-known characteristics of each brand.

They all sound scrumptiuos. I would like to try them all but I would be leaning towards the Boli. Too bad these wouldnt be eligible for a monthly box split as I couldnt afford to buy a box.

With how good the regular release Mag 50s have been, I doubt I will spend a premium to get the Mag 48s...but you never know.

I was thinking the same thing but then I am a sucker for a commie marketing campaign. Darn.

I've tried a few prerelease versions of some of these cigars. The Boli's were decent, but I haven't made up my mind yet, there was some stuff that I hope get tweaked in the final blend. A friend of mine tasted popcorn in the Petit Belicoso. The Dukes are really good, but really young especially towards the end. Think longer fatter Escudo, if that's your thing, then you'll like these, though maybe not the difference in price. Haven't tried the Upmann yet.

I'm really questioning the value of the Bolivar, especially as Germany has a couple stellar sounding RE's in the same marca this year. For the money I'd take a 109 or Laguito No.1 over a short and fat torpedo anyday. Hopefully the lack of sales of this vitola translates into a message for HSA and discounted prices, but who knows, we may see more short and fat cigars in years to come.

Would there really be that much of a difference between the Mag 50 and the Mag 48?

I have a Mag 50 but was letting it age a while longer before I smoked it.

The Mag 50 ELs from a few years back were a different blend, had a much darker wrapper than the new current production ones...so maybe the Mag 48 will have a special wrapper? Or maybe they will just be the same freakin' cigar, 2RG smaller, for 60% more a box?
