Every cigar, every puff. I wish I could have back my first four months of cigars back to do over. I think smoking without retrohaling is a waste.

I nosehale about 40% of the time while I smoke. The first 2/3 of a cigar is much easier. As you get into the last third it tends to get a bit more harsh.

I found the first puffs are pretty harsh, I like to make sure the stick is burning/tasting good before I start the retro, then I can go until it gets hot/harsh/bad or until my lips are burning.

Some sticks have made me tear up a bit from the retrohale (not necessarily a bad thing) and like alot of other brothers have mentioned, towards the end of the stick it can be sort of harsh.

For those of you fellas that are retrohaling on every puff... you must have noses of STEEL!! I guess I'll get there eventually

Retro haling should be done after you have expelled about 80% of the smoke out of your mouth first and then the rest thru your nose so you don't burn the hairs out of your nose after awhile. It is possible to retrohale ( snorking) on almost every puff if you do it right,,,I only do it half the cigar just to keep the sense of the tobacco where I like it,,in my mouth and in my olfactory senses.

Tip: if you retrohale with a cigar that has a Cameroon wrapper or binder (as in the RP Summer Collection 2009, which I found rather strange, never saw a Cameroon binder before that cigar, I had presumed they were too delicate), you will get an intense rush to the back of the head and your sinuses will clear. The feeling is very similar to eating horseradish or wasabi for our sushi-inclined friends. Very fun to do.

In case anyone is interested, here's a buddy of mine explaining it:

AWESOME video! The absolute best explanation I've seen (then again, I'm a sucker for illustrations, lol).

I started "retrohaling" after reading about it here (about a year ago). At that time, I could only do it once or twice a stick because it would burn my nose like crazy. Now, I can do it maybe 25% with most sticks. Last night with my ELO#3 I was able to do it about 75% of the time...what a smooth smoke!

I really adds to the flavor of a cigar, not just for that particular puff, but for the next several puffs as well. That's my experience anyway. There are some flavors that I can only pick up through a retrohale--and can then taste it in a few subsequent puffs as well.

Along with toasting and pre-lighting (fully lighting the cigar before your first puff), I think that retrohaling is the most important thing I've learned about smoking cigars.

This is really the only way you can get the full flavors out of the smoke.:ccool:
I agree, though with a strong cigar I find it hard to retrohale very often. I was at the Cain release event last night and a lot of the guys were finding it harder to nose those things.

I would highly suggest limiting smoke throught the nose. Speaking from years of experience as I went through boxes of Clays. They have a delicious aroma and I would do yard work and other projects while smoking, often keeping the cigar in my mouth while I breathed the smoke from the foot and also puffing out through my nose. My sinuses are a wreck and now I keep the cigar away from my face as much as I can. Just my experience. It certainly might not affect others the same way.
