Had another interview yesterday for a Production / Inventory manager position. I did OK, but got a bit upset over one of the job "preferences". They really want someone who can speak SPANISH. :wtf:

I'm seeing this more and more in job postings and starting to wonder when California was bought back by Mexico. It's a truly becoming a sad state of affairs in this country, when workers are now being asked to speak a foreign language in their own country in order to earn a living.

As far as I'm concerned, if you come to the USA and can't speak ENGLISH, then you should not be eligible for any kind of employment. And to any and all the companies that do hire these people in order to save a couple bucks ... here is my salute to you. :angerFU:

Australian Prime Minister does it again!!

This man should be appointed King of the World. Truer words have never been spoken.

It took a lot of courage for this man to speak what he had to say for the world to hear. The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least he was willing to take a stand on his and Austrilia's beliefs.

Whole world Needs A Leader Like This!

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:

'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

I THINK THAT ABOUT SUMS IT UP.

I know what ye mean, Ted. Just like I expect people to speak Spanish when they're here, I try and find out at least key phrases in whatever language they speak where I go ("where's the toilet?", "how much?", "thanks", "excuse me" and directions at the very least).

P.S. Want some tutoring?

I agree. Everytime I went to another country I tried to learn phrases and took a translation book with me...I think the same should be expected here.

If someone moves to a country to work or live they need to know the language of that country, period. If not then they are SOL. We should not be foreced to learn the language of another country.

My wife actually had a patient's family member call to rant and rave about how her 80 year old mother was sent home without having a hearing test done because nobody in her office spoke Mandarin Chinese!! They expected my wife to pay for an interpreter!! What a wonderful world!

At least you don't have two official languages down there. And have to deal with going to another state, and finding many signs are only posted in the other official language.

I'm in agreement with you on people needing to learn the language of the country where they have moved to, or learning some key phrases for a country they plan to visit.

Uno mas cerveza, por favor!

I can agree with all of this. But at the same time...I can see why employers want you to speak Spanish. I can only speculate that this inventory job would have you managing spanish speaking immigrants doing all the work that no one wants to do. It's probably more likely that an American will speak spanish than a mexican will speak english. Also, these days with unemployment high, there are a ton of people applying for jobs. They are able to pick and choose the perfect candiates. I applied for a lousey warehouse manager job at Sweetwater brewery and it turned out over 800 people applied for it! They picked some guy with 20 years experience from Budweiser or something...Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Just to add...in the case of a museum guide or something of the sort, I'd understand it. I doubt that was the case, though.

Best answer to the "do you speak spanish" question is: "I am willing to learn". Just shows you have initiative and are flexible. Just my 2 whole cents.

Moro,

I completely agree with you. Anyone who chooses to live in another country should learn the language of that country. If visiting, well that is another matter.

I for one hate it when I have to press '1' for english, when I hear the somali language being spoke by employees of a hospital I work at, when I cannot communicate with an employee of an american company because they do not speak english, etc....

I also believe it goes the other way around....
