I imagine I am going to get a bunch of different answers to this but I am trying to get as much information and opinions as I can so that would be great.

I am in the market for a 9mm pistol. I have Shotguns but have never owned a pistol myself. I have fired a handful of different kinds over the year but none of them were mine. I plan to rent a few and shoot them at a local range to see what I like but I want to narrow down my search before I get to that point. I also need to know what kinds of things to look for and what to ask when shopping for a pistol.

What I am looking for and why I have settled on a 9mm is I want a pistol that has enough power to be useful should God forbid I ever need it for defense, but that will still be affordable to go shoot for fun. I'm gonna buy a gun, so I am going to want to go shoot it and I don't want to have to take out another mortgage to finance target practice. .45 rounds are expensive.

So... What are your favorites in the 9mm variety and what do I need to know before I buy.

Be sure to try out the Glocks. I think they make an excellent first handgun since they are simple, reliable, and fairly inexpensive.

I'm a huge fan of the Beretta Px4 Storm line. If you're going to CC, get the Px4 Subcompact! A phenomenal gun. Go to a range where you can test out different pistols, too. I shoot subcompacts much better than I do full-size pistols. Not sure why, but I point them much better. I wouldn't have found that out unless I fired different types of guns before I bought one.

That's why I wait until the bad guys line up before I fire ...

Either way ... I vote for Glock as well. Never had an issue with mine.

Here's a good website for more detailed info on lots of 9mm handguns.

I like many brands but I carry my Glock 19 more than any other. Consider a .22 conversion, you can shoot even a .45 on the cheap with one of them and you are not limiting yourself. As for what to get, shoot as many different pistols as you can and find the one you shoot well and is reliable.

I suggest Glock, I carried one for a previous occupation and loved it. I carry a Beretta now and not too crazy about it. Glock makes great pistols for both plain sight and concealed.

I was looking at the XD. Very feature rich. I think that is one a certainly want to try out if I can find one to shoot. The Glock 19 is of course on my list of must trys as well.

Since nobody has said it yet I'll throw another gun to consider: the Smith and Wesson M&P line. They make a full size and a compact. Quality made and the best ergonomics in my opinion. I'm very happy with it.

I am going to get my conceled carry permit. Not sure how often I will actually carry it though. Time will tell on that.
If you are going to carry, the Glock is a good choice. Make sure you try out the Beretta PX4 Storm subcompact. The difference in recoil between the Glock and PX4 is astounding (Beretta is way lower, and follow-up shots are incredibly easy/accurate). I can put all 14 rounds through a 3" hole at 7 yards in like 7 seconds with my PX4. I also like the feel of the Beretta better. But the Glock has millions of accessories, tho.
Just make sure you go with what you are most comfortable holding and operating.

You can't beat the glock as it is easy to break down and has fewer parts meaning fewer things that can break. Overall great gun.

I carry a Beretta 92fs in stainless and a Kel-tec PF9 and they are both great guns. The pf9 is tiny and conceals easily even in gym shorts. The Beretta is just awesome and is very accurate.
