try a Springfield XD, Glock and a FNH. They are all good guns. I have a 2 Springfield XDs and 1 Glock. Like them both. I have shot a FNH and it comes with a good trigger.
How's the recoil on the XD? The more I read about it the more I find myself liking it, but of course I haven't shot it yet.
Right now I think my three favs are the XD, G19/17, and the Baretta PX4. I like the HK too but it is pricey. You are the 3rd person to tell me to try out an FNH. I hadn't heard of that one before. I think I need to look at the FNP-9 as well.
On a 9mm, the recoil's not going to be much even on a polymer frame. My buddy has a
.40 cal xd and it's pretty manageable. For what it's worth, the .40 is a GREAT cartridge and I prefer it greatly to the 9. If I were you, I'd give the .40 a look. My 2 cents only. Good luck.

I carry a Glock 23 almost daily. It's not a skinny gun to conceal that's for sure but it's light compared to other pistols. Only warning I have with glocks is that if you want a safety you better look elsewhere. Your finger is your safety when we're talking glocks.

I have a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 and a Glock and Springfield XD-M in .40. All three shoot very well and all handle nicely, fitting my hand and pointing well. Hands down, the Glock is the easiest to take down and clean.
You have the right idea in renting and shooting several different models before you buy. 9mm is cheaper to shoot, but .40 would seem to be a better self defense round (not that I would want to get hit with either one)
Nowadays, when folks think about semi-auto handguns, they often think of polymer frame models only. Be sure to try out some of the stainless steel models from S&W, as the extra weight can feel pretty good in your hand.

I carry most of the time without chambering a round, if you practice it only slows your fist shot down by a fraction of a second and is great for weapons retention.
Interesting. I'm always toting a chambered round but the gun is also always in the holster and I have a well trained finger.

But really, why a 9mm? If for traget practice, sure. But if for self-defense, then a minimum would be a 40 cal.
i shoot the XD in .40, my brother has the HK. he likes the way my XD shoots better than his...not to say his doesn't shoot good or anything, he's just better with mine.
for the money, i vote XD.

Don't know much about the CZs though I have never heard a bad thing that's for sure.
As said before I own and carry a G23 most times location allowing. I think it depends on what type of weight you want as well as what safety features you'd like.
Speaking of weight, the glock loaded is 31oz. loaded and a smidge over 21 when unloaded. The CZ is listing the weight at 32oz. and I'm guessing that's unloaded. A bit heavier to carry but it will make it more controllable to shoot.

I've shot the XD-9, the CZ 75P01 & the PX4 and it's real hard making up my mind which I like best. Any one of them is a great choice.
personally, im a fan of the 1911. but a 9mm 1911 is just weird to me, it just doesnt seem right to me not being .45. on a side note, the 9mm round is extremly fast and there have been reports of 9mm rounds going through a person and hitting someone else. but i will agree they are fun to shoot. but what it boils down to is what YOU like. how it feels in your hands the recoil if its manageable, etc. i will say that glocks are great pistols. my cousin is a Recon Marine and is around all kinds of pistols, but loves his glock more than anything.
the best thing to do is to get range and try a few out. most people are going to recommend the glock but youve got to go with what feels right to you.
