I've not had an Anejo yet myself, and just had my first Opus (loved it!). I know that they have the same exact filler--the Anejo is basically an Opus Maduro.
I've only smoked one, but it was very different from the Opus. While I'm generally skeptical of the whole "most of the flavor comes from the wrapper" line, the wrapper on this one does seem to add a lot of flavor and set it apart, flavor-wise, from the Opus.

There are several lines of cigars that are exactly the same exept for the wrapper, and I can tell you they change dramaticly from one to the other. I'll research some examples for you.

I like my Anejo's anytime. 1 year or right out the box I enjoy these. Try them with a year+ of age and you will appreciate the flavors more. To me they are more distinct.

No I believe anejo are a mix of opus, hemmingway and don carlos fillers. And the congac barrel aging add's a little to the wrapper flavour as well. Not the same as opus maduro but way easier to find.

Hmm, I read an article by the Fuente family that told the Opus and Anejo stories. Apparently, one year the Opus wrapper crop was destroyed, but they had all the filler tobaccos. So they used the Opus filler tabac with a different binder (not sure what) and wrapper (CT Broadleaf maduro I think) and called it the Anejo. I suppose the article could have been fake or something wierd, but that's what I read.

Two sticks that proved this to me -

Tatuaje SW Reserva -> Tatuaje SW Reserva Maduro
LFD Coranado -> LFD Coranado Maduro

Only thing different was the wrapper and they were very different from the original.

Let's not forget Tat Tainos -> Frank -> Boris (Although the length and box press is different on these too). Pete has given us a gold mine to compare with all the CBL wrapped sticks.

So after all this talk I just smoked my first Anejo ...

Great cigar! This might be the perfect dessert stick. I got a lot of that sherry flavor that you guys talked about. There were similarities to the Opus, but this wasn't nearly as complex. One of the strongest maduros I've smoked, though. Very, very good. I don't think this was very old, however--I got some harshness and a bit of ammonia at the end. Also one of the longest-smoking cigars I've had

I'll definately pick some up if I find them at retail price.

I smoked a #50 today that is about 15 months old. Superb smoke. I think I like these better than Opus X. I grabbed a couple Sharks today. I'm going to smoke one over Christmas and save the other for a bit.

I snagged me a bunch recently as well, I find I like them better with 6-12 months of age on them, seem to be more flavorful if that makes any sense.
