You've got it all wrong; Altadis USA is the company that sued Pete as well as the company that produces all those SHITASSED NCs with the old Cuban trademarks. That's the company I could give two-fucks about.

Altadis SA (now owned by Imperial Tobacco) is the parent company who purchased a 50% interest in Habanos SA--but let's be clear here, they DO NOT manufacture or own the brands of the Cuban cigars being produced today.

We're talking about completely different corporations here, with different management, different staff, different trademark ownerships and different products entirely. The name may be the same (or at least once was, before the Imperial buyout) but they're totally different legal entities.
The following quote is form the Imperial-Tobacco website.
"In acquiring Altadis we also gained market leadership, in value terms, in the large cigar segment with a strong presence in all the cigar categories in the USA."

I don't see the separation you are referring to. I've always believed the legal attack on Pete had nothing to do with the flor, but everything to do with his copying the Cuban regional and special releases.

Does this further clarify or just make it muddier?

"In December 1999, Consolidated Cigar Corporation / SEITA entered into an agreement with Spanish tobacco giant Tabacalera S.A. This new tobacco company was named ALTADIS, S.A. ALTADIS stands for Alliance Tobacco Distribution. As a result of this merger, Hav-A-Tampa was brought into the fold and new facilities were added. The new enterprise became the world's largest cigar company with over 7,000 employees worldwide. In September 2000, the parent company purchased 50% of Habanos S.A., owner of most of the Cuban trademarks in the world and franchiser of the Casa del Habano shops. The final merger, resulting in today's company, was completed in early 2008 when Altadis S.A. merged with Imperial Tobacco, headquartered in the UK."

It does say "Altadis USA" but also says "Cuban Cigar Brands", whatever in the world that says.

It is all clear as mud haha

R&J's, Monte's, Don Diego, H. Upmann and Henry Clay just to name the popular ones.
Until all of this happened the Henry Clay was one of Pete's favorite cigars. He acctually rushed through a Tat Black just so he could get to the Henry Clay he was given at the Beach Herf. Just saying not all the smokes are terrible. I think we all hate to see our team hit by corporate greed though. I still like Tats better than anything I've ever had from Altadis.

This from CigarCyclopedia.com on 11/24....

Altadis U.S.A. and Tatuaje Cigars end fight for the fleur-de-lis

A tug-of-war over the right to use the fleur-de-lis symbol and related trademark issues was ended last week with a settlement agreement between Tatuaje Cigars and Altadis U.S.A.

“I’m just happy that we can both get on with our business,” said Tatuaje owner Pete Johnson on Friday. “I believe this is the best for everyone.”

The agreement will result in the dismissal of Johnson’s suit for declaratory relief in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles filed on August 22 and Altadis U.S.A.’s suit for trademark infringement filed in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Florida on October 30. Altadis U.S.A. was to have answered Johnson’s filing in Los Angeles on Monday.

Johnson confirmed his understanding that the agreement also ended Altadis U.S.A.’s pursuit of issues with Don Pepin Garcia Cigars (El Rey de Los Habanos) “as far as their involvement in my cigars is concerned.” Altadis U.S.A. is still in opposition to the El Rey de Los Habanos filing for registration of a “TG Tabacalera Garcia” trademark, with the matter now before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Although there was considerable turbulence over the use of the fleur-de-lis symbol and other trademark issues in this case, the opportunity for settlement with little harm to either side was clearly present. In its filings and communications with Johnson, Altadis U.S.A. and its affiliates did not object to the use of the “Don Pepin Garcia” name or Johnson’s use of the fleur de lis as part of a Tatuaje logo with other symbols. And in Garcia’s most recent promotional materials, references to his new Nicaraguan facility are strictly to its new name of “My Father Cigars” and not to “Tabacalera Garcia” which is pretty close to the “Tabacalera de Garcia” name owned by Altadis U.S.A. for its factory in La Romana, Dominican Republic. Garcia’s own name is well known in today’s cigar market and the “Jose Garcia” and “Jose Pepin Garcia” marks are already registered.

Until I read this I had not known why Pepin was sued along with Pete!

Just so everyone knows, drymistat is also an altadis product, so if you are staying away from their stuff, you should stay away from that too.
