The problems with the neighbors who

1) won't use pesticides
2) are too lazy to pull weeds

So the wind blows all the fricken weed seeds into my yard. Got any advise for that?
:gangfire::gangfire::gangfire:

yep, I have that problem as well. :gangfire:

me and my dad used to alternate aerating (sp?) our lawn and putting a thin coat of good top soil each year. with the use of fertilizer and good amount of water, seemed to do the trick

jjflynn3,

I have three small dogs, and I was wondering if there is something I can use to help keep my grass from dying from the dogs urinating in it?
The only thing that works is a water hose, water the spot where they urinate right after they go and it keeps it from burning. Ridiculous I know but thats about the only idea.

Wow, great advice - I'll have to try this! I only have one dog, but I have a small courtyard that she has successfully torn to shreds...

Thanks for all the help guys! Most of the people in my neighborhood keep up with their lawns. But most of them have it done by vendors. I'm not trying to pay for something I can do myself.

The ammonia is actually the grass food, the chemical formula for ammonia is NH3 so it contains Nitrogen, which promotes top growth and gives your lawn its green color.
Since there is a lot of ammonis in urin, you would think this would not do the damage that it does, go figure.

Top dressing is always a great idea as well esp if you can get your soil tested to see if the ph is lacking.

the fact that theres a lot of ammonia in urine is exactly why it damages the turf. the concentration is so great that it has a negative effect. if you notice around the damaged turf that there is a bright green ring, thats due to the fact that the concentration in that area is high but not high enough to damage the turf.

You know your starting down that slippery slope. I fert 4x a year, grow 3-5 inches tall, hit with a little nitrogen and she comes up green and thick.

You'll need to aerate and thatch in the late summer/early fall.
