Dana, my fiance, had a beta fish for over five years. It died a few years back. She has wanted a new one for quite some time. So I went awhile ago & got her a brand new one as a surprise. I was never into fish at all, but I grew to really like this one. I named him Sam. Dana hated the name. Last night we noticed he wasn't eating & was breathing very hard. So I went out this morning & bought a tank with air filter & a small heater. We read online that his water may be to cold. I swapped him into his new home. He seemed to be doing much better & now I think that was his goodbye. I just looked at him again & he is definitely dead. Damn it. We will go to Petco tomorrow & find another one. Oh well thats life I guess. I know it sounds very trivial & I keep telling myself "it's just a fish". But I'm still bummed out.

Sorry to hear that bro. Doesn't matter if its a fish, dog, cat or bird our pets all become part of our families. Looks like its time to fire one up for Sam.

When a human being forms a bond with an animal regardless of how trivial it may seem, its not something that easy to let go of.

If you find your self dwelling on it, pay some homage to the little guy. Sit down, have a smoke and try to think about why you became so attached to him.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It's not trivial, my wife and I had a rat that we had euthanized a few weeks ago. He was a very friendly guy, but was having some respiratory issues and wasn't getting better. We miss him, pets can mean a lot to people.

Sorry about your fish man that sucks.

Side note and funny story about betas. At our wedding we had very pretty center pieces that had betas, swimmin garound the roots of the live plants we used. The idea was to have the kids in the wedding be able to take them home and keep them.
Well after a few drinks the men in my wife's family decided to gamble a bit. They collected all the center pieces, and started to bet on which fish would win the fight. The kids were not pleased, nor was my wife. But Dayum, who knew those fish were so vicious.

that's what happens with betas. they're kinda finicky and hard to keep sometimes and even if you change their surrroundings for the better, sometimes it causes them even more stress. sorry for your loss. get another one and try again. i've got 2 saltwater fish currently, and have had 12 over the course of the last 2 years. hard to keep!

Brother if your looking for a fish with an awsome personality get an Oscar. They are like puppy dogs in a tank. I've had a few and they are just the coolest fish. They can get big (up to a foot so you would need a 40 gal tank atleast) but they are so loving for a fish. Mine would eat right out of my hand! I would give it all kinds of stuff like worms from the yard, bugs, even hamburger! They even get excited when they know your home..lol..no chit!!
Sorry about your fish though!

I agree, sometimes they LOVE the dirty water the're accustomed to. Ive had some trophy ones in the past that have lived in there poopy water and bam, once I change the water they died. I currently have a 55 reef, I have gone thru(blown thru really) almost 500-700$ in fish that have died. I came to the conclusion(after ALOT of trial and error) that one of the inhabitants of the tank was stressing these fish to the oint of DEATH!! So goes w/o saying he's no longer in the tank. Stress defiantely can kill a fish!! Sorry for your loss!!!

Yep, they're not called "fighting fish" for nothing!!!

That sucks Joe...sorry to hear! I don't like fish either but I had a beta that I kept in my office at work. I loved that stupid fish...but he kicked the bucket when it got too cold in there one day. They are cool fish...his name was masta-beta...I know it was childish...but everyone got a kick out of it when you told them.

sorry to hear again...good luck on next one brother!

I'm really sorry, Joe, that sucks. It was 2 weeks ago today that Chewbacca (our cat) was accidentally killed by the vet. The "it's just a pet" thing only makes sense to someone who has not lost a pet.

Sam will be missed!
