So I am admittedly just beginning to get into the world of cigars. I've got various Cubans, Dominicans and Nicaraguans in my humidor. I've smoked a handful of different brands and sizes and am starting to develop my tastes and preferences.

However...

I still tend to get sick after smoking. Not just the nicotine "head rush", but full-on nausea, vomitting, cold sweats, fatigue, even diarrhea the next day.

It doesn't happen all the time, but enough that I am getting to the point where I am almost afraid to keep smoking cigars. I enjoy the flavors so much, but this isn't worth it.

No, I do not inhale. And yes, I am taking my time - I smoked a Bolivar Robusto the other night which took me two hours to smoke.

Is there any way to stop this? Any miracle cures or treatments?

I am unable to smoke cigarettes for the same reason - they made me sick. But I also find cigarettes completely unenjoyable.

I want to be able to continue with my cigar smoking because, as I mentioned, I love the flavours and the experience while smoking. But I'm getting a little tired of finishing it all off keeled over a toilet.

sounds to me like you need to eat something before smoking...

either that, or nicotine might not just be something your chemical make-up allows you to tolerate.

I'd certainly go with the eat-first thing before waiving the white flag though...LOL!

You need to build up tolerance.

Keep smoking!

Is it a regular occurrence for people who are new to cigars?

I read that even some experienced cigar smokers will have the occasional stick that really kicks their butt.

It's just that, well, I have somewhat of a phobia towards vomitting. So, this past couple of weeks have been...less than pleasant.

Really, is there any way at all to cut down on that effect?

Or, if the answer really is just building up tolerance and continuing to smoke, does that mean I should start smoking every day? Because while I love the cigars, even without the adverse effects I don't think I'd smoke more than 2 or 3 in a week.

Will that be enough to help me?

Eat something before you smoke. If you feel it coming on stop smoking grab something kinda sugary ie soda, small candies, taffy, etc. don't overdo it but get something in your stomach it should help. I've heard oatmeal cream pies work fairly well

Maybe until your tolerance builds up stay with the milder sticks, don't worry if you are properly storing your cigars they won't go 'bad'.

I don't know much about these things, but it sounds like an allergic reaction.

Could you be allergic to nicotine?

http://www.ehow.com/facts_5037498_signs-symptoms-nicotine-allergy.html

I'd talk to a doctor and maybe get an allergy test done.

I would think, though that if it was an allergy I would have that reaction every time I smoke, no?

I smoked a Monte Cristo a couple of nights ago and had no adverse reaction at all. Same with the Romeo Y Julieta I smoked last night.

But on Thursday I smoked a Hoyo de Monterrey and became ravenously ill afterwards.

:waving:hello....

Have you tried the "eating first" thing.....I think that might've been mentioned, but I'm pretty forgetful.

To be honest, no I haven't...but it's mainly because I'd rather not have TONS to puke up. :hanghead:

Yeah sounds like maybe your system is more sensitive to nicotine :dunno:. I find that making sure I'm well fed before smoking helps greatly, but even then some sticks get to me. When I start feeling that way I quit, no matter how good the cigar. It's not worth feeling like crap later. If you're eating before hand and still feel that way, I don't know...maybe smaller cigars?

I used to get that way when I first started smoking fuller bodied cigars and it sounds like you are smoking some of the fuller sticks. Eat before you smoke will help A LOT and make sure you have water with you while you smoke. The water will help a ton. Eventually you will get used to it. I can light up an LFD double ligero at 8am with nothing in my belly and not get sick now, but it took awhile to build up a tolerance. It doesn't sound like an allergic reaction to me, just need to get used to the nicotine kick of a fuller bodied cigars is all.

Therein lies the answer to your problem my friend....

I don't think you're going to puke, but what do i know...:scratchhe

Too much nicotine on and empty stomach is definitely not what you want...

Well I'm a bit confused - I've not experienced any sort of reaction of that nature - are you eating or drinking anything with aspartame in it? Sound much like reaction to a poisonous substance - either the poisonous sweetener or some other poisonous substance such as insecticide - most tobacco growers know how to do it right, but I would consider poisoning - - - are you very young? Adolescents, for example should refrain - I suppose - I've not come across an incident of this nature that didn't involve some sort of poisonous substance ingested - I'm sticking with aspartame or insecticide - sure there's nicotine involved with cigar smoking, but good grief - that kind of reaction sounds life threatening. Do you have a similar reaction when you use cannabis? - - - It's a mystery - send your unsmoked cigars to me and I'll have them tested for insecticides ~:0)

Wow !!! I give you credit for still being in this game. Eat, have coffee with MILD cigar, and keep trying :) Repetition is a mother of success.

OMG, I smoked my first full-bodied on an empty stomach and almost ralphed in my car on my way home from the B&M! Next time I ate before or at least in close proximity. Ok, I just made sure my stomach wasn't empty.

Saturday I had a light breakfast and after smoked a Tat Angeles and had a cup of Italian roast to wash it down. PERFECT.

EAT, you're a growing boy! :grinFU:

you should definitely be eating before you smoke and drink something with a lot of sugar. Sugar will fight off the effects of the nicotine. Puff slowly, take your time. Also maybe till you get a tolerance use a spit cup and spit every other puff. That will prevent you from swallowing too much tar and nicotine.

I smoke pot all the time and have no ill effects. But I never use tobacco for tip - just the straight marijuana.

And yes, I drink soda with aspartame fairly often. Have never had an adverse effect of any kind.

Question to everyone - when smoking a cigar, it saturates your saliva with nicotine, right? Which is why you should smoke on a full stomach, because the food will cut down the concentration of nicotine-riddled saliva hitting your stomach?
