Bolivar vs Bolivar....?

Good day to all my good people.,

Just a little clarification. I do know this, when I hear Bolivar only one came to mind *Cuban Cigar* until now. I now know do to a recent thread that Cohiba *Cuban* and Cohiba * red dots* are not the same. So whats the gimick on the Boli's same as in the Cohiba. I did see that the Latter Bolivar scored about a 90 rating as did the latter Cohiba? Whats with this, is this common practice to sponge off of another companies successful line to sell cigars?

The non Cuban ones took the names of the Cuban brands that were already existing. Thanks to the USA for this, they don't acknowledge the Cuban brands here so others took them for their own.

Yep basically they stole the US trademarks to the names since our govt won't recognize the Cubans trademarks.

New York District Judge Robert Sweet ruled on December 14, 2009 that the Cohiba brand belonged to Cubatabaco and that US based General Cigar can no longer use the Cohiba name for its cigars made in the Dominican Republic. Since 1992 General Cigar used the Cohiba brand, originally started in Cuba and owned by state run Cubatabaco, to market their own Cohiba cigars.

The Cohiba brand is sold in every country except the United States because of the long standing US Embargo against Cuba.

General Cigar’s representatives said they’ll appeal the judge's ruling in this case that has been in the courts for ten years. However, General Cigar is allowed to continue selling Dominican Republic Cohibas until the appeal is heard.

The lawyers for Cubatabaco say that this decision "vindicates the fundamental principle that a company cannot be permitted to reap what it has not sowed and that it cannot exploit the goodwill and reputation of another enterprise’s product".

The website Cohibas.com has been covering this trademark and brand dispute for several years.

Then Altadis and General may have bought those name from the original farmers. Also now, Altadis owns a good portion of Habanos S.A. so they use/plagiarize Cuban cigar names and styles all the time.

That may be true for some of the products but both cohiba and Trinidad were released well after the embargo was in place and both are now in use by non cuban manufacturers. They may be able to claim that trinidad was an old brand they revived but they only did such to capitalize on the name and prestige created by cuba.

It isn't always trying to leech off another companies name. Most of these Cuban companies were sieges by the Cuban government during the revolution, and the families who founded the company fled to different regions like Nicaragua, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, etc. So in a way I guess you could say they are leeching off their own success?

When someone wrote an article evaluating the different Cuban and Domestic cigar brands, only 2 brands were blatantly copied. Most of them were made by the original makers of the Cuban brands after their brands were either stolen by the government or because they wanted to expand to the U.S. market.

So what does all this have to do with Quality, is the Cuban bolivar anything like it's Us counterpart? I know it rated in the 90's, but has anyone tried these?

Not even close. The Cubans have a depth of flavor the NC's don't touch.

Total agreement...Cuban Bolivars are among the best and most consistent.
