I'm interested in this as well, though not for a walk-in - I'd just like to try my hand at making some 200-300 count humidors.

Is cedrela the only wood one can use to make a wood humidor?

I hate to make another thread about this but I can't seem to find what I need. I went through the boards looking and I think I have decided to go with:

http://www.woodprojections.com/walk-in humidors.htm

I will be getting the paneling and prebuilt shelfs. If anyone knows of a better deal or another retailer with a huge difference in price per bd foot. Please let me know.
Tom,
I am going with www.customcreations.net for my walk-in(closedor) I am currently building. I also decided to go with the plywood for the walls and ceiling and the 3/4" plywood shelving, crown molding, baseboards, etc from this company. As an estimate for a 6x6x9 room with everything to complete it wood wise, the total shipped is approx. $2200. Another place I researched, www.woodvendors.com for Spanish cedar but in the tongue and groove format and is 1x4 was about $2100 shipped. That included them milling to my specs and would have covered the walls and ceiling. Baseboards, etc. would be extra. After doing an exhaustive research online and locally these were the 2 best companies for those formats. I should point out that the cedar really isn't needed on the walls and ceiling, the shelving is perfectly fine and if singles are being stored in cedar trays that helps also. I was on the fence about whether to even do the walls and ceiling, but decided to go forward with it and go all out. I could build the walk-in for substantially less and be just as effective without the cedar.

I went with the Accumonitor for controlling humidity and will be using a Ciezo humidifier, again a little overkill on the humidifier, but I like the auto-fill feature on it. I am lucky in that the room I am using shares the same wall as the bath sink, so I will be installing a under sink RO system that will plumb directly into the humidifier so I won't have to buy distilled water. Again a little overkill, but once I decided to cedar the walls, etc I figured I might as well go all the way with it.

I have just started working on mine, so it will be a few weeks before it is complete. I am waiting on the wood company to get more 3/4" Spanish cedar wood to make the shelves as they just delivered a big order and are out currently. So there is a 2-3 week delay in that, otherwise everything else is ordered or arrived already. Jason(Funkejj) can provide some answers as he has helped me a ton already as well as RonC if you decide to go with Accumonitor. I inquired to another company that makes the set and forget it as they also sell a auto-fill humidifier, however they only wanted to sell me the humidifier and their humidity control system together, so I chose not to go with them for that.

If you have any questions along the way i will be glad to help out as I am sure the others will also.

James

You can make it out of any wood you want as long as you line it in spanish cedar. This is a somewhat decent pic of the one I made this summer out of cherry. 200-300ct.

I look forward to hearing how the walk-ins turn out. My wife and I are looking to build a house next spring, I know that's a long way off, and are going to include a walk-in and smoke lounge in the finished basement/wine cellar. Cheers

Thank you for the excellent information Vegan702. I have looked at both websites and am getting a better price per bd foot on the other (thanks to a military discount). I am also on the same page for the overkill part. I know that I don't have to use all cedar but I feel if I am going to do it I should do it the best I can. I am not the one doing the wood work so I will pass over the information to my Work for beer friend.

I haven't done a lot of research on humidity device for my room yet. I planned on contacting Ron with some sizes and see what he suggest. My biggest problem is I will be gone for probably a month at a time so the RO is almost a must. Still haven't gotten that far yet. I am planning on buying the Cedar this weekend and the rest of the supplies for the basement.

Thanks for all the info so far guys.

Humidity wise then I think you will only have 2 choices, a Ceizo like what i'm getting or the setup from Aristocrat as those were the only 2 humidifier that offered a auto-fill option. The setup from Aristocrat would be cheaper, only $399 vs about $600 for the Accumonitor and Ceizo setup. Good luck, look forward to seeing the pics when done.

May I toss a question in, as well...

If you were putting together just a basic cooler-dor, and put shelves into it, would they need to be Spanish cedar, or what other woods would you be able to use for just some basic shelves?

I'm trying to figure out some kind of relatively inexpensive storage solution. I have a couple of cheapie desktop humidors, and several different plastic containers with cigars in them. Thinking about combining a bit, to get a better handle on humdity.

Thanks.

From the research I did the best alternative to Spanish cedar is Honduras Mahogany. Honestly in today’s age of humidity control you don't have to have cedar. The cedar adds the smell and helps with pest/humidity control. You can also go to your local B&M and grab a ton of cedar boxes and build them that way. For the cheapest option I would recommend the cigar boxes myself.

Thanks, Tom... I would be scared to get them from my local... they're probably all white & fuzzy...

... and I wish I was kidding! Ask Dan or HalloweenHarry!

Tom I went to a local hardwood vendor for my wood in the walk in. I paid 5.73 a board foot - a 15% quantity discount. I used the Accumonitor with a basic room sized humidifier. I am going to plumb RO to it this summer using a basic float for auto top off. You got my number if you need help.

I have been looking at your pictures a lot using them as a basis for what I am trying to do. I am reading on humidity needs now and think I want to do something similar to what you have now. The only difference is a larger humidifier.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Wow nice score on that bf price! Locally, I can't seem to find anything under $10.

The question I have is how to install a cooling unit. I wonder if I could take a wine cooler and gut it and put it into my humidor project?
