A strong ash is nice but I don't think it's 100% indicative of a cigar being fantastic.

I've had very well constructed, great tasting cigars that couldn't hold the ash more than half an inch or so.

Depends on the tobacco used.

Notice the wrapper splitting right above the ash. That's the biggest problem I have with Pepin cigars. He uses such thin wrapper leaf that I seem to get a lot of cracks and splits.

Of the dozen or so Verite church ills I've smoked only one hasn't had wrapper and burn issues. Very tasty but very frustrating cigar.

Yes very frustrating cigar. Wrapper blows up on this cigar for me. Never had an issue like this with any other cigar. It really pisses me off for such an expensive cigar.

I seen Nubs stood on about 3/4 of the cigar as ash....great construction, sure, but if they don't taste good.....

Tight roll really doesn't mean quality...but still a cool pic.

One of the main reasons I did not buy alot of these infact any more.
I love these cigars but man what a pain. I spent close to $100 on these when they first came out. traded two smoked two still have one in the humi. Both of mine cracked. I still smoked them but it completely threw of the zen I know this cigar can bring.
I have had alot if wrapper issues with others as well...mainly in the Brown Bands in the Tat line. if it doesn't crack it flakes elswhere on the stick. very dissapointing when it happens.

a split wrapper may be an indication of an overzealous puffer.

maybe.
maybe not.
either way slowing down a touch wont hurt.

I probably smoke more Pepin made cigars than the average smoker, actually, most time I smoke Pepin made, and I barely ever get a cracked wrapper, or one that splits while smoking. As a matter of fact, over the last couple year, I've only had a hand full of cigars split on me (all manufacturers)

I don't ever have problems with any of his stuff using broadleaf wrapper, but the stuff using corojo, I seem have wrapper issues on half of them. The reason he started putting his cigars in cello is because they were getting so many cigars returned with wrapper damage from shipping. With that said, it doesn't stop me from smoking them, and loving his cigars. :awholelot

And I've tried dry boxing them, smoking them slow, dampening the wrapper, etc. and still have problems with them. The Bad to the Bone cigar he did for the Outlaw back in 2007/8 was amazing, but I don't know that I've ever seen one that didn't blow out the wrapper at some point during smoking.

Sorry we all seem to be taking the joy out of your pic, and the experience....

But, even a crappy cigar can sport a solid ash...Humidity in the room, storage RH, etc.

I have only smoked 2 of mine, and had no issues...Nice smoke, IMHO.

Thanks for the pics, though....Great of you to share :)

Here lately I have had a couple of really good cigars where the ash looked flaky though it didn't fall off unintentionally. I never judge by an ash but being able to do that with that size of cigar is very cool. Thanks for the pic. Hope to visit Centro soon. On my list of things to do. I just picked up one of these cigars this week in a trade.
