I love this forum! Someone posts up a thread about beetles....I post up a thread with detailed information covering everything (including veteran cigar smokers, myself included, freezing thousands of sticks with no flavor/taste issues) and then we have this response:

I was always under the impression, though, that freezing your cigars (however carefully you do it) greatly damages/reduces/even eliminates the oils in the cigars.

This seems like a really, really bad thing. I mean, the oils are what give most of the flavour. Without them it'll taste like you're smoking grass and newspaper.
In the same link I posted, there is empirical data showing that the average household freezer is cold enough to kill beetle eggs, then this response fallows:

I read somewhere that you must reach -32F which in my freezer at home doesn't happen and I don't think it happens in most, you must crack the eggs to kill them from what I have read. You can kill the larvae and the actually beetles themselves by freezing in your freezer but not the eggs unless you have an industrial freezer.
I give up......

Have only had beetle problems with cc sticks purchased in the late eighties and early nineties. Where I stay in the tropics, mold is much more of a concern.

No offense, brother, but just because you post up a link doesn't mean everyone is going to automatically follow it.

I'm thinking of buying one of Danby's thermoelectric wine coolers.

Anyone have experience with this brand?

I have a 75 bottle Danby that works like a champ! I use it for red wines and keep it at 59 deg F.
For my cigars, I have a large Vigilant and a Tower and several desktops. I keep the Tower (and desktops) in my "Man Room". I live in South Florida. I had a separate VAV box, thermostat and shut-off damper installed in that room and keep it a t 70 deg. I keep the door closed in that room and the HVAC will only run to that room on that theremostat. My AC bill went up $15 a month, in the summer, after I got it installed. It cost me about $400.

My mistake, I thought the point of this thread was to help the OP with clarification regarding beetles, temperatures etc.? No offense, but when someone posts up incredulous information without any scientific or empirical data, and I refute this with scientific and empirical data........fallowed up by statements like not everyone is going to read/fallow/listen? I've tried to spread some knowledge, take it for what it's worth. (To make things easier, so people don't have to click on a link and spend five minutes reading to view). Fact A: Household freezers are cold enough to kill beetle eggs. Fact B: Freezing cigars in double zip locks does not alter the flavor profiles of cigars in any way, shape or form. Hope this helps the OP!

So what is the point of this thread? Some people don't like to follow links to other sites, next time just post the information up here. Don't get so offended by people asking questions either, not everyone is a veteran smoker like yourself.

The article you linked to is a good read but it even contains this comment

Many people will tell you that the freezing will ruin the taste of the cigars. I have my opinion and that is there is no discernable difference. In addition I have bombed, gifted, traded, sold several hundred cigars to members of this board and others and not one has told me that the cigar tasted like it was "frozen" opinions will vary on this but there is little if any imperical evidence either way.
So it is the authors opinion and even states there is no proof either way.

It has been said many times here over the years in the authors opinions that household freezers aren't cold enough and that flavours will be affected as well as risking damages. Like I said, many here have claimed this. I didn't make these statements as I have never experimented or felt the need to.

You quote a couple people and get all butt hurt that your link to some off site forum post isn't getting you praise and respect. Sorry about that bro, you ever think that maybe this goes against what they had believed and that is why they said just that? You offered what you felt is some insight then came back pissy when some one questioned this because it went against what they believed to be true.

In my experience, which I'll admit has to this point been limited, is that freezing does not affect taste, nor damage the cigar, if done properly.

I am currently in the process of freezing all of my cigars after doing it sparingly over the last couple years (only when I was worried about something in particular).

Also, I have talked to many collectors who have frozen for years in their home freezers and none of them have ever said they have seen beetles since they began freezing.

Here is the process that they have used:

Triple bag the cigars, sucking excess air out of each bag with a straw.
Place cigars in the fridge for 24 hours.
Place the cigars in the freezer for 48-72 hours depending on how cold your freezer gets (mine gets to -10* C, so I freeze for 48 hours).
Place the cigars in the fridge for 24 hours.

Although not scientific by any means, I recall this issue about taste differences from frozen cigars on another board. Two boxes of cigars were used..one frozen and one not frozen. They sent out one cigar of each to 25 people. Nobody could tell a difference. Go figure.

Is it just me or is everyone a bit touchy recently?

Look, for what it's worth, this is why I tend to quote at least a portion of anything I link within a post. Not everyone likes following links (especially to other forums as has been noted) and in some situations, people can't, at least until a later time.

Agreed! I'm smoking an Opus X Perf. #5 to celebrate my douche baggery! I hope the freezer killed the beetle eggs, and didn't ruin the oils and flavors..............:cbig:
