If and when GSP and Silva fight it will be at a "catch weight" and will be a "non-title" fight.

I think they'll stick with 185 as Anderson walks around at 230. Cutting anymore would be really hard.

For sure it will be a non-title fight though. If GSP were to win there is no way he could defend both belts. Strictly for that P4P number one spot.

Personally I hope they don't do the fight. GSP is a good size welterweight, but will be undersized as a middleweight, especially against Silva. I think with the emergence of Jon Jones, a superfight between Jones and Silva would be better. Anderson also has a natural size to fight at light heavy.

By politics I think he means GSP stepping up into a title fight when he shouldn't be considered, not having fought in that weight class before. Possibly some of the same issues I discussed as I think it would be a massacre.
Didnt read it that way. Seems he's indicating that if it goes to a decision, it would favor GSP due to politics so they can have the Silva fight, but I'll let him clarify.

In that breath I think that a close decision should always go to the champ.

IMO, to be the champ, you should beat the champ, but rampage found out that doesnt happen.

yes was going to say the same thing. Look GSP is a great fighter but silva would kill him at 185 because GSP would lose too much of his speed going up to 185 and vica-versa if silva had to drop down to 170 he'd be so drained from making weight that GSP would destroy him.

I don't see this fight ever happened its something all mma fans will talk about as something they want to see and wonder why Dana never delivered it. If this fight does by some miracle take place it will be at MW and this is why:

  1. Silva has nothing to gain by cutting even more weight
  2. GSP at a catch weight isn't proving much and has no direction if this fight ever takes place it will be because there is no one for GSP to fight at WW taking a catch weight fight gives him no direction what so ever unless he plans on retireing right after
  3. Silva has much better fights waiting for him at LHW and HW (if he decides to bulk up) plus there still are a few fighters he can keep busy with at MW he doesn"t need to fight GSP
  4. Losing to GSP at a catch weight will be disasterous for Silva's legacy and a win will prove nothing in the argument for P4P No.1 fighter of all time they only way A. Silva gets some credit for this win would be if GSP fights at MW and mowes down a few contenders before facing Silva for the belt.
  5. GSP has stated over and over again that if he was to fight Silva it wouldn't be at a catch weight he would bulk & move up

GSP has already stated on record that if he wins this fight, he will relinquish the belt and move up to challenge Silva for the title. It has been confirmed by Dana White even. I will see if I can find the interview somewhere but it is done as long as GSP comes out victorious.

Don't like GSP but right now he just seems head and shoulders above everybody else in his weight class. But I will be pulling for Shields!

Just read that. Here's one site with it http://www.fightline.com/fl/news/2011/0127/535890/georges-st-pierre/. I hope they give GSP a good year to properly put the weight on. It's too bad they can't get Nick Diaz in for the next title shot, cause I can't stand that guy, and would love to see him get pummeled by GSP.

Regarding the politics, I have to disagree. The judges, and refs come from the sanctioning athletic commission, and are independent of the UFC. Dana has zero control over who refs, and judges, and how they ref or judge.

As a result he has been very vocal in his displeasure over how some these decisions are made. If politics of the judges skew their decision, money is not the factor, unless you want to insinuate that their paid off.
I'm not saying they'd be paid off. At least, you'd hope that wouldn't happen. What I was saying was that in a close fight that geos to a judges decision I think it will go to GSP. Even if Shields slightly edges him. It would have to be pretty decisive for Shields to win if it goes to the cards. If GSP fights Silva everyone involved wins. Judging commissions, promotors, sponsors, fighters....everyone.

I'm not a big fan of GSP and will be pulling for Shields to win.

That said I voted for GSP as I feel he is the better fighter of the 2.

I like GSP mainly for his positive and generally respectful attitude, its nice to see a guy live like that day to day and take it with him into the ring, that kind of respect seems less and less prevalent today. That said, I know very little about Jake Shields and his general disposition but from what I can gather technically between the two, it looks like Shields is going to have the fight of his life if he wants to pull off a win here. In the end, I think I'd like to see GSP give one last successful title defense and then be done with WW, like others have inferred, its almost come to the point that GSP has nothing left to prove at WW and a loss to Shields seems as if it would only delay Rush from moving on to MW and more exciting fights.

I wish it were that way. If it's too close to call, the Champ should always get the nod IMO, but I have seen to many fights where that doesn't happen. One thing that pisses me off with MMA judging is the reluctance, or flat out refusal to give a 10-10 round. Too many fights where a simple take down somehow wins a round.

The commission wins no matter what. Even if the GSP/Silva fight doesn't happen, there will be another fight in its place, so they'll get paid no matter what. Its not like a special show outside the regular schedule of events will occur. They dont get paid based on how much money a card makes. You know Dana has to be cheering for this pay day though.

I still hope the fight doesn't happen. Bring on Diaz.

You'd have to change the rules to allow this - as it stands now, judges don't have the option under the 10-point 'must' system.

There's some good discussion about it on the ufc boards here:
http://community.ufc.com/blog/member/PedalNinja/all/four_steps_to_fix_mma_judging_under_the_10_pointmust_system
Actually the rule is there. A 10-10 round does meet the criteria of the 10 point must system. UFC 127 Siver v. Sotiropoulous being the last fight to have a judge score a round 10-10 (round 2)

Another thing I hate is their reluctance to award 10-8 10-7 rounds. You have to beat a guy within an inch of his life to get a 10-8, and if you do anything offensive like land a kick or punch, they'll score 10-9.
