I echo a number of comments so far. My rules are:

1) Buy within your means. There will always be another cigar to spend money on. There will always be another sale. There will always be something to buy.

2) try a bunch of different cigars to see what you like. 5ers are great for this. You can try and see if you like it. If so, consider a box. If you don't, move them out either by selling them, gifting them or stick'em in the back of your humi and try them later on.

3) Buy by the box when you can on cigars that you love.

4) Have patience. Don't get caught up in buying everything that you can. Part of the fun is being selective. Make sure that financially you are taking care of the necessary things in life before spending money on what is unneccessary. Slow and steady is the way to go. No need to try to keep up with the Jones.

5) Have fun.

I found my cigar stock grew in a natural way, I started with a 25 count humi, it started to get filled with me buying 5 or so sticks a month, but I was only smoking 2-3 a month at most. I started to see some deals online and split a box with other brothers a few times and needed more space so got a 7 drawer, as time progressed I started to smoke 3-4 a week to the point where I smoke at least one a day and have a 7 drawer plus a box storage humi. But I never got in debt to smoke, just bought when I could afford and took advantage of good deals.

One thing I have done is gone for a deal on a box then realised after one or two that stick isnt for me, I leave the sticks for a year or so if they still dont work for me I sell them on to another brother who likes that smoke.
What he said. The day finally comes where you want to leave the sticks in the box. The progression continues Cooledor, cooledors, cabinet.

Well if you have been smoking for a few years then you know what you like. If you know what you like start buying them, say a few sticks here or there as your budget allows. You don't have to run out and buy 5 boxes to fill a humi.
X2

just as he said you know what you like:ccowboy:

Well, since I just really got into it, I've been ordering samplers, and then 5'ers when I find a cigar I really like in a sampler. If you've been smoking a while boxes and 5'ers may be up your alley, but I kind of like the variety I get by ordering samplers.

Exactly what JJ said! I wish I had some advice before I got started. I bought to fill up and way over did it. My taste changed quickly and I was stuck with cigars I didn't care for anymore.

^this. I'm kinda on the same path. I've tried enough now to know there are a couple handfuls of brands/series that I thouroughly enjoy, I know theres a handful that I really like, I know theres some that are ok and if I'm drinking I won't really notice that they aren't great, and I know of at least a few that I wouldn't wish upon anyone. Lately if I'm looking to swoop up on a sampler deal, I look to make sure theres something in the bunch that I thouroughly enjoy and the rest is fair game to trying something new. But in my past couple trips to a B&M, I've found the most fun in putting together my own samplers. =)

great tips in here.
It's not a race, so take your time, and buy what you can afford. Slowly but surely I went from a 30ct, to large tupperware, to a wine cooler, and have since added a locker at my shop to that....
with the locker I should be ok till I can order an avallo 2000... and the avallo 2000 should be good for a few years at my now slowing pace.

One last bit of advice from an old guy...if you smoke a cigar and it just lights up your life, try a second one the next day. If it happens again, buy a box, right then.

I'm with this...

I'm now sitting on close to 900 sticks in my Avallo 1200. I built up quicker than I planned but mainly because I found great deals on some boxes and won some really good auctions on Cbid and CigarAuctioneer. If it hadn't been for them then I'd probably only be at 300. :bottle:

I'm now to the point that I'm adding higher quality stuff so it's 5ers for me. A box of cubans or 2 still draw my interest though. :ccowboy:

it depends on the mood. i tend to buy singles and if i really enjoy them i eventually end up bying the box. problem being that i am still trying out, and even if i know what i like, i still want to taste some more.
