From a resale stand point I wouldn't. I am not a Realtor only an appraiser but it might have to be disclosed to every potential buyer of that property that it was once a church.
There is no might, he would have to disclose that it was a church, and I would think that might scare off many.

I had a very good friend that converted a 10,000+ Sqft train station into a house, and I have seen old school houses renovate. The main thing is getting it for the right price to make it worth the trouble, and I do mean trouble.

Even if it has great bones, you will need to bring in an architect, and have plans drawn up for the city, and possibly even the county to ok the project. The electrical, plumbing, interior framing and A/C would cost just about as much as building a new home, so unless you really like the location, and get it for a great price, I don't see how it would be worth the money.

Just my $0.02

About disclosure, why would the fact that it was once a church scare anyone away? Not as if it had been a mortuary or something like that. (And I'm Jewish, so not a parishoner of a church.)

Why exactly does there need to be a disclosure of what it used to be? So if he bought an old bologna factory that qualified for residential zoning would he have to say it was a bologna factory? I don't get it if it looks like a house and lives like a house why you would have to disclose it USED to be a church back in the day.

Smokinghole: That's just the way it is with real estate. When you sell, you need to disclose anything and everything you know about the property. Sometimes you can even be held liable for something you didn't know - but should have known.

It's just another wonderful part of home ownership ...

I just find it weird I guess. I mean I own my house (well the bank does haha) and had the disclosure agreement but I thought was for past problems or known issues.

Anyhow if having to disclose it was a church is a deterrent to you secretsquirrel then I would stray away. I know as a buyer it wouldn't bother me but there is always the unknown variables in selling it and this might be an issue for you selling it down the road.

Hell picky buyers is making me take serious consideration into what flooring I put in my house this spring. I like some of the new "green" products not because they're green but because of the textures and grainy appearance they offer. They may be too crazy looking for the average home buyer though, I think they're cool though.
