So I'm sitting here at my mom's place on the back patio trying to envoy a late night stogie when I keep hearing some [not very sneaky] thief try to get through the neighbors yard.

He literally fell getting over the neighbors fence. Made more noise than drunken dog (don't ask why I know this) going through the yard and tripped at least 3 times.

I causally set my Millennium [seriously, I had to put a 2000 down on account of this douche] made plenty of noise going back inside, grabbed my revolver, (unfortunately for him, if he makes the horrible decision to cross into my yard my 2-legged defense is put away so he'll have to deal with my 454 Casull which is loaded with 360 grain hard casts) and returned to my seat on the cool concrete and resumed partaking.

I made enough noise it sounded like he left. But as I type this the idiot is back. How the hell is this guy not already locked up?

I'm continuing to ATTEMPT to make as much noise as him but damn, I feel like it would be blatantly obvious because I'd really have to try. He's already woken up the neighbors to the left (the yard he is in its too the rear of the house) and that's an elderly near deaf woman.

I think he just caught on, but if he's still there I'm just gonna call 911 from here, I don't feel like putting my nicotine down again.

I guess my question is why you didn't call the police in the first place? Do you hate your neighbors?
I made enough noise from the get go that it was obvious he was second guessing getting inside anyway. Also, the response time of the EPPD is pretty miserable from my experience and he would have been long gone by the time the cops showed. Scaring him away seemed the easiest option.

I've heard calls that they say they're owners of a shotgun or some sort of home defense firearm and that if PD doesn't get there soon, they'll take it into their own hands should they trespass. Well, that dumped all available officers to go to the house pretty damn quick.

@CVAC085 I didn't think of that. That would likely illicit a faster response time. Either way, as far as last night goes - he left. It's a shame the nice neighborhood I once grew up in isn't as safe or as well cared for as it once was.

On a different note, I'm surprised nobody here has given me any grief(of the humorous variety) for temporarily living with my mother. You all are a serious bunch of nice guys....although, maybe too nice - I'm watchin' y'all! <leering>

I was too busy trying to imagine what a 454 would do to a two legged predator...

360 grain hardcast. That's made to take down Alaskan Brown's. I was honestly praying I wouldn't have to use it.
I don't think you'd have a problem with under-penatration... Good news is, a bullet that size doesn't really need to expand much to still leave a good size hole.

(Note: I mean "good news" only in the ballistic sense. I'm very glad you didn't have to shoot anyone!)

@atbat82 those bullets aren't designed to expand...at all. They have a big broad meplat that through some highly complicated physics magic creates a bigger wound channel than the best expanding smaller pistol rounds.

Regarding penetration, I'm fairly sure after it cleared the schmuck it would clear the wall behind him, the house wall behind that, and maybe a tad more.

Personally would have went for the silent gun and cell phone call route. Would rather see something happen to the guy rather then scare him off this one night to allow him to have at it another night.
Agreed. Go get the gun and call the cops while you're doing it. You don't want the guy coming back one night when you're not prepared for it.

I feel at this point I may not have as much faith in the cops as everyone else here. But I will admit when I was wrong. You've all made good points. I should have called when I stepped inside for the gun, whether I believed the police would have shown up on time or not. Hopefully the worlds sneakiest criminal won't return, but if he does I won't just grab a revolver that can amputate an appendage. ;)

Isn't that a little dangerous in a residential community?

Always check your surroundings before firing. Well at least that's what they taught me in my hunter's safety class.
If somoene's coming at you and you take the shot, and it goes through him, the fence and the neighbor's wall, (unless the statement was hyperbole), couldn't that hit a person in the next house?
