I'd probably open it up and see if there is something obviously wrong that is an easy fix first (maybe one of the wires to the peltier is loose or corroded?)..So, is opening up the back of the unit and trying to ensure the internals are clear of debris/crap worth it, or does this need to be set out on the range immediately, for 5.56/7.62 redecoration?
Thats a load of crap! It should be able to maintain temps up to 10deg cooler than the ambient temp in the room the unit is in. Full or empty doesnt make any difference. I'd check the back to make sure its not all clogged up. You also want to leave an air gap behind the unit, putting them in enclosed areas or tight to the wall can effect their ability to cool properly. So I contacted the seller, who promptly responded, which I appreciate. He stated the following:
The wine cooler needs to be kept somewhere cooler than where I have it (there is nowhere cooler than La Casa de Spenny, let's be honest). The peltier unit that is cooled off by the fan (which is confirmed running) will apparently not cool off well if it's in a warm area.
The wine cooler needs to be kept full because the items in the wine cooler are what holds the temperature.
Any truth to these statements? I understand it would fight harder at higher temps, but it's not fighting, just slowly and quietly fanning.
This is why I never decided to get a wino because I'm blessed with a cool basement.See that's my confusion. It'd be sensible enough for me to just get a regular cooler then. My basement stays in the mid to upper 60's year round, so why put a wino in the basement. ?
so you would prefer a cabinet? This is why I never decided to get a wino because I'm blessed with a cool basement.
No more storage! I spent enough money filling up the one I have.so you would prefer a cabinet?
Dave is pretty good at organizing large storage bombs! No more storage! I spent enough money filling up the one I have.

Yeah, that should be plenty of space. It's sitting in a corner, 8+ inches out from the wall in back and 5 from the side, since the manual I dug up online mandated a minimum of 5 inches space to enable airflow. I plan on pulling it out and tearing the back off when I get home to see how gunked up it is. Perhaps it can be salvaged. If not, I'll probably just take the trays out and shoot it to shit.
It is by the one on the back. Peltier units have a hot & cold side. The hot side faces the exterior & the fan pulls heat away from the unit to be disbursed. The peltier is not cooled off by the fan...
From my math, assuming the fan is functional (which I have no reason to doubt, it's on/running), and suggesting the peltier isn't totally broken (basically, saying that the heatsinks/fan/internal assembly is totally covered in gunk. The Peltier's hot side would be at ~84 degrees and the cold side would be ~74 degrees, explaining the rise above room temperature. Is this making sense? I'm just using Google to try and learn a thing or two before diving in tonight.Yeah, that should be plenty of space.
As much as I enjoy shooting shit, I think I'd be more apt to spend a couple bucks on a new peltier to get that thing up and running.
Interesting. So I should be feeling warm air blowing out from the back of the unit? It feels cooler... :OIt is by the one on the back. Peltier units have a hot & cold side. The hot side faces the exterior & the fan pulls heat away from the unit to be disbursed.
The rest is spot-on.
It should be a little warmer than ambient. That's why the placement of the wino is recommended to be a certain distance from the wall. The space allows for dissipation of the heat. See my other post in the thread too for troubleshooting.Interesting. So I should be feeling warm air blowing out from the back of the unit? It feels cooler... :O
Much appreciated. We'll have it open tonight after work and have some fun pictures for you all. Thanks again! It should be a little warmer than ambient. See my other post in the thread too for troubleshooting.
Cooler than the air blowing inside the unit? When you open the back, Look for evidence on weither or not its been taken apart before. If they replaced the peltier before, might be as simple as being installed backwards or the polarity being reversed?Interesting. So I should be feeling warm air blowing out from the back of the unit? Lol, would not be beyond the realm of possibility. What's interesting is that when I was retrieving the unit. The wino was off, meaning the ETC detected it was below 70 degrees, or had been unplugged completely prior to us getting there and was made to look like that. Perhaps being sealed, the humidity was kept in check and the temperature stayed at ambient room temperature. Who knows. Tonight, we do science. It's already running a separate temperature controller so somebody's been inside there at least once. It's possible they reversed the wiring for the new TC into the plate causing it to heat the inside and cool the room lol
