as for the MSRP thing, one, it helps to actually know beforehand, and two, at the end of the day, pay what you feel comfortable. dan's guide looks to be a tad old, but only by like a year (and good info, thanks for scrounging that up, dan!), my local usually has within a buck of that. and also varies widely based on state taxation. i just picked up a fuente fuente yesterday (favorite size, BTW!) for $11 off the shelf, so dependent on AR taxation, you look to be in the park on that.

also, check this out: http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php/23224-Fiscal-Responsibility. there are guys who do roll out rock star finds here, but you don't have to drop ten and twenty (and more) a stick to enjoy it, or to feel like a member here. if you are not going to enjoy yourself with that $14, don't spend it. personally, though, i hope you IMMENSELY enjoy it, as i have used opus many times as a special occasion smoke.

also, if you can find the opus's cousin the anejo, yum!

I've always been lucky to have a B&M that charges MSRP or better for all their products. For things like Opus, many places won't sell them mail order so that makes it an additional step more difficult. If you're in or near a major city, most B&M's should be charging retail, its just the taxes that kill you depending on state. Key like JJ says it to know what the MSRP is on any stick and then adding taxes. by "finding them at msrp" I mean before tax, so for example a FF is I believe around $10.25 now so if you find them at that price before tax, you're gold. If a retailer is an appointed Opus retailer, they are supposed to charge retail for the opus but that doesn't always happen. G1

Thanks for the info Dan, it's good info for the next time I am in there. I would have liked to get them in Florida as the taxes are less than in Georgia, but oh well. I'll keep an eye out for next time.

The last time I saw them at the local Total Wine store (it has a nice walk in) they were over $20 and I knew that was too much.

Thanks again guys.

Though a fine cigar (Opus X), my personal preference runs towards the Añejos. Because Fuente has marketed their line well, the Opus X holds a certain mystique. The Añejos have that added depth of flavor I enjoy. I will smoke (and have a stock of) both, there is just something about the Añejos...

I've only had one fresh Opus that I thought was worth the money. The rest were not good enough, so I don't smoke them fresh anymore. With a year, they can be worth the coin to me, but usually I just smoke something older (because I have them).

For me, 3-years is the magic number, with 5-years being the truly "Special Occasion" point.

But it says Opus X...and that's what matters haha. Anyways, I love Opus and Añejos. The Opus does have the "raisin" flavor mixed with a sweet sugary taste. Don't grab those, just come to the DR and I'll take you to the AF Official Cigar Lounge and you get to choose any Fuente you like ;)
You hit it on the head, bro! To me, when aged enough these are like a peppery cinnamon-raisin French toast. There's just nothing like an Opus.

The problem with any msrp is that you will almost never find it. Opus or any cigar for that matter. Places do charge more for opus sometimes because they will sell. But msrp is just a keystone price so if cigar maker a sells a cigar for 10 dollars to a retailer msrp is $20. The problem with that is tobacco tax... In Nevada tobacco tax is 30% so cigar maker a's cigar actually cost your retailer 13 not 10 dollars. This means if they keystone or just double cost it will be 23-26 dollars on the shelf depending on retailers discression and policy with key stoning and taxes... So do not be surprised if often times a cigar is a few dollars more than msrp. You can just buy online and bitch when all the local b&ms close if you don't wanna pay a few dollars extra for taxes or just get to know your b&m and support them and I'm sure they will always do their beat to take care of you... I agree that MSRP is just a keystone price, for singles at a B&M that has a lot of overhead you should expect to pay $1-2 more before taxes on something like an Opus. Not all states have a tobacco tax, in FL we just pay sales tax for cigars. If your state has a higher tobacco tax you need to comparison shop to find out your best location to buy from, which isn't necessarily going to be the cheapest place....Customer service and cleanliness is worth a few extra bucks, imo.

BMack, I agree.

Personality, Friendliness, and Customer Appreciation is always at the top of my list for someone to earn my business. Though this local guy isn't the cheapest, he certainly makes every effort to stir customers in the right direction.

It may also be worth noting that this guy is also the ONLY cigar shop in town............ Aside from the "Discout Smoke Shop's" on every third corner.

BOTL's, I cant tell you how much I appreciate all of the insite you have all bestowed on me here! But I certainly do appreciate the hell out of it!

Have a great day,
-Chrisso

Opus are one of the extremely few that I will pay a small amount over MSRP. Trying to battle with other guys to find the things have turned me off to them in the past, but if I have to pay a buck more a cigar to just get them, I'm fine with that.
