the thing with the die hard movie is that they hardly explain it, they just kinda skip some steps and end up with 4 gallons, haha. i believe they go with the first method that was brought up tho...

i answered with

1) Fill the 3 gal, dump it into 5 gal. Fill 3 gal again, dump into 5 gal, leaving one gallon in the 3 gal container. Dump the 5 gallon bucket, pour the 1 gallon in the 3 gal bucket into the 5 gal bucket. Fill 3 gal bucket again...4 gallons.

2) Why do you want to buy an electric can opener?

3) I'll put my work ethic up against anyones. I'll work faster, I'll work harder, I'll work longer. No one will work has hard as I do.

Those were my answers.

He emailed back saying OK, 11 am interview? and btw, there is another way to answer question 1 that involves one less step, can you think of it?

I emailed back the other way...fill the 5 gal 1st, dump into 3 gal, dump 3 gal out, pour in 2 gal from 5 gal, fill 5 gal again, fill 3 gal up, leaving 4 gal in 5 gal bucket.

The job was described as a proejct manager and commercial sales for roofing, siding and window projects for a large local company.

question #2 is designed to look for a basic sales principle. Someone says they want product X but you sell product Y. YOu need to know why they think they want product X so that you can invalidate their reasoning, thus making your proudct Y superior. "Why do you want an electric can opener?" establishes a baseline, or starting point, for biginning the pitch for an electric can opener.

someone with sales experience or a business degree could probably explain the principle a little more clearly and concise, but i believe my explanation is correct, despite being crudely explained.

#3 was ansswered in the same short format he emailed me...short and to the point, but spoken loud and clear...I'll work my ass of for you!!!

Wouldn't it be faster to fill each bucket half way and get your 4 gallons?

Since I was too lazy to read all 3 pages and knew the first answer (though the others aren't too complicated) I just want to say: Congratulations, Gale!!! One question: where does this leave the bistro idea?

Good luck dude. I love to give questions that make people think. Also look for straight answers. My favorite is; Are you smart? Most people fumble with that one or say gee I dont know. The person that says, Yes, yes I am gets hired.

Good luck with the interview bro.

I've had that one tried on me before, not wanting a can opener, but some other product. I usually leave the store and try someplace else. It's too basic of a catch and it usually happens to me at Best Buy.

My answer would have been, "Well, I can order one for you and you can get it in a day or so", and give him some info on an electric. That way, the customer has to come back, and might just purchase the electric. You either sell the manual you ordered or he buys an electric. Bonus points because he came back though.

INterview went well. I left with dude tellin me i was at the top of the list and me sayin i'd think about it. Called him back about 2 hours later and told him I was his huckleberry, don't worry bout interviewing anyone else. He said give me a few days, i still have to go through the other resumes. I told him to do himself a favor and just forget about the others and hire me.

He called me back about 1/2 hour later and said he was going to save himself the trouble...come back up today and fill out an app. take a drug test and get a background check. Said he can't make me an offer until that stuff is done.

So i leave in about 10 minutes for anothe rmeeting. I'm pretty sure the job is mine.

One question: where does this leave the bistro idea?
As for the bistro...steady income is a HUGE plus right now. I'll still work on the bistro idea, but now that i'm gonna have a steady pay and can rebuild the savings, it won't be as much of a gamble. I also like that all myu eggs won't be in one basket. I also wanna see how bad the economy is gonna get. So for now, it's kinda on hold.
I was never really sure i wanted to work 80 hours a week with no vacations anyhow.
