I've found that often if I don't like a cigar, and then try it again a year later, I miraculously like it. That has happened to me numerous times. I can't explain it.
This is something of a dilemma for me. There are just SO MANY cigars in the world to sample, if I have the choice between trying something new or going back and giving something I didn't like the first time another chance, I'm likely to choose the former...
I agree, but I don't buy singles, so there are inevitably some cigars in my humi that I didn't like the first time.

I bought a lot of samplers early on, and I try a lot of new single sticks at lounges when I travel, so I don't have too much inadvertant duplication-- if I have more than one of a kind, it generally means I liked it enough to get a five-pack or a box of ten... Maybe someday, I'll get to the bottom of the humidor and wind up trying a ten-year-old stick that underwhelmed the first time, but will suddenly become a new revelation with the age! Oh, and so as not to entirely thread-jack, I will also note that I save all the bands from new-to-me cigars that I smoke and drop them into empty bourbon and rum bottles so I can pick them up from time to time and slowly spin them to gently tumble the bands like a kaleidoscope and thus look through them to reminisce about some great epicurean experiences.

I maintain a spreadsheet with columns for make, model, vitola, and comments-- and in the comments I make basic notes about whether or not I liked it...
This. Plus I rate everything just for fun and I write general notes about the flavors and construction. Plus box code. Etc. Etc. I'm definitely an excel nerd though.... :)

I remember the early days when I would keep a cigar journal....hey it was back with alt.smoking.cigars was all there was :)

Now if it doesn't stick in my head then I don't worry about it...plus part of the fun is revisiting something later to see if it or I have changed.

I make note of the ones that really wow me, of course. And if there is a cigar I really like on multiple occasions, I'll probably get more if the price is right. Beyond that, I don't remember. But for the last 2 years I have been keeping meticulous notes on each cigar that I've smoked ... which is kind of fun, because I can look at that list and notice the cigars that I actually smoke a lot vs. the ones that I only think I smoke a lot, if that makes sense.

I use the cigar journal or cigar boss ap on my iPhone, cigar boss has most of the cigars already on file you just add you notes.

I wish I had the discipline to do a spreadsheet, but whenever i have started one with the intent to keep it going it always ends up 1 and done.

I used to keep bands.. And would write short notes on the back of them to remind me of the flavor, strength, and how well I liked it (used a 1-5 star rating)... You'd be surprised how much info you can squeeze on the back of a cigar band...

Haven't done that in a long time though... Now I just keep it in my head...

I use cigar geeks online humidor, if it's something unusual that I may not remember I'll write myself a note in the comment section. Other than that, just by memory.
Ditto this...and a great forum of people there as well. As was said when you smoke a great cigar it's not likely you will forget it and when you consider that you'll probably go out and buy a box(s) of them that pretty much stays glued into your brain stem.

It's all in my head. I tried to keep a cigar journal for a little while but realized that I enjoyed my smoking more when I wasn't trying to keep notes on it. While smoking I mentally categorize the cigar as: Didn't like, try again, good for a budget/good for a special occasion or buy some more of.

Cheers :ccool:

I keep my inventory and smoking log in a single spreadsheet, inventory on top, smoking log on the bottom.

When I smoke a cigar, I find the appropriate line in the inventory section, copy it, and paste it at the end of the smoking log. I add a brief note, a rating, and the date smoked.

So far, I have notes and ratings on 180 different brands/marcas.

Are you saying there are cigars you didn't like when young but did like after they'd aged a year? I so, that would not be surprising at all, since cigars change with rest - they become smoother, less harsh, less peppery, and have less nicotine.

To my tastes, most cigars are better with a year's rest than when they're young

I remember the ones I absolutely loved and the ones I absolutely hated. I try and take notes for a majority of the sticks I smoke. I do have my lazy days though

The really good and really bad ones are always memorable.
This 110%
When I first started I took pics, saved bands, kept a journal. But after awhile my palate changed and so all that went out the window. Over the years I've become somewhat a cigar snob and only really enjoy a select few. I'll break it up from time to time and try something new but for the most part I only have a handful of sticks that really suit my taste all the time. Thus it's easy to remember.
