You did good the guy screwed up, at my age and health impairments I pretty much go overboard at work on everything I can. I can't believe he would do that hard to feel sorry for him but I guess I do since you mentioned his family.

More than a few choice thoughts on that situation, but not really worth it. This is why I don't give references for work...period. Not to friends, not to family, not to the husband of a friend of my wife. Just too risky putting my neck out there.

It's hard not to feel like an idiot in that situation but you didnt do anything wrong.He's the real idiot for ruining a great opportunity that you helped give him.

Well Dave, it sounds like this guy is a real jackass for smoking weed on the job, let alone his first day. And sorry, but it sounds like you should have done your homework before forwarding the resume. To me, these are all grave warning signs:
I've found referring friends and forwarding resumes to be a rewarding experience but I only do it for people I know and trust.
wow, not hard to see why he cant keep a job. couldn't even wait till he atleast caught up with his rent. got to really know someone to recomend them for a job.

Just found out.
1. He sent me an email yesterday that said he had gotten a job acting as an attorney, for more money.
He also asked me to call him. I did not because I do not want to buy a line of BS
2. My wife emailed her friend this AM and said that no matter what they were still friends.
3. His wife emailed back and said he told her he was coming back, to this office on Monday, to act as an attorney here. (I work at a law firm)
4. confirmed with my HR dept that there are no new attorneys starting on Monday. And that anyone let go yesterday was not returning to work here.
My guess is that he told her he got a promotion on his first day, (yeah that happens all the time) and will then blame it on us or some other SNAFU.
My wife is now in a predicament, but she’s been told by me not to say a word about it. I’ll bet we hear of a divorce in the next few months. While I am embarrassed here, his wife will be devastated if the truth ever gets to her.
I also want to add that this dude is an ATTORNEY....at some point he must have been motivated and smarter than the average bear.
