I haven’t posted regularly in about 9 months or so. Back in December 2013 I had to have a third surgery for my Crohn’s Disease (a couple more feet of intestines gone). Since that time I’ve had more problems than in the past if I smoke a cigar (smoking is bad for those have Crohn’s Disease, but I haven’t been affected by it too much until now). I get quite sick for a few days and it’s no longer worth smoking cigars as I have been for the past 40 years.

My big question now has been what to do about my stash of cigars that I have sitting in my humidor. I’ve been trying to think of a BOTL way to distribute them and not try to sell them off in small lots. Since I know how much BOTLers raffles I was curious if selling 100 numbers which I would I tie to the Dow Jones on a specified day – whoever matches the cents portion or the Dow Jones would win my entire collection (I could also use the NASDAQ, which would win a small samplers).

I haven’t counted my cigars in a while – but I have a couple hundred premium cigars (no crap) about half CC and half NC – mostly robustos – along with a bunch of accessories.

Once I figure what I have to get rid of I could decide on decent price to charge for each number ($10 to $20) and I would give the majority of the money to CCFA (Crohn’s Colitis Foundation of America) or something similar.

My questions are (if you gotten this far) are:
1) would something like the above met the BOTL requirements?
2) how many people would actually be interested in something like this (if I set a limit of 1 or 2 per person then I would need a minimum of 50 people).

I am sorry to hear about your disease and the struggles associated with it brother. Crohn's is serious business.
I am not sure of the requirements of BOTL for something like this, but would think if you broke your sticks out into lots of 10-20 and straight up sold them, you would raise a decent amount of money. If you went the raffle route, I'm sure you'd be able to generate enough interest. If it meets the requirements.

So sorry to hear about your health problems but you are doing the right thing by it....don't risk it and as far as your cigars there are options as have been stated already. Don't know what I'd do in your place...been smoking cigars for so long that I shudder at the thought of having to say No Cigars!

Good luck with your challenge. Sorry to hear about this but cigars are not supposed to negate your quality of life. You are making a tough, but good decision. As far as your idea, 200 pieces could really go fast. Eight blind samplers sales of 25 and they would be gone.

Good luck. I'm in to help however you decide to do this. Frankly I don't have room for what I've got so if I won the whole raffle a lot of it would get boomed out and sent to cigars for warriors.

Best wishes to you and your health..

As to your collection. Id break it into groups of 25-30 and throw em up for sale. The WTS section stuff always seems to go pretty fast. You could post all lots in one thread..Should sell like hot cakes. Sale would be Easy n done....no contest rules, trying to sell all spaces, etc.

I am also sorry to hear about your health. Long term health is of course way more important than the hobby we share.

I applaud your willingness to do a raffle and give your cigars away. You spent money somewhere along the line and I don't think anyone here would hold it against you to sell them off. In fact I would advise that you do so. Take that money and invest in a new hobby!!!
Most classified adds here go really quick when they are priced fairly.

Best wishes and I support whatever you decide.

Like someone said before me, when one door closes another one opens. So look forward to the next adventure, whatever it may be. Best of luck!

thanks for all of the responses so far. I sent an email to the generic admin - but never got back a response on whether or not my all-or-nothing idea would be acceptable. I'm not such which admin would make the ultimate decision on this.

Yeah - Crohn's is rough stuff. Since it's a degenerative disease I'm not going to get "better". I've just been trying to avoid a bag as long as possible with diet and whatever else I can. I'm not my seventh medication - we'll see how that works.

When I was diagnosed back in 1995 and was told I had Crohn's my response was "what the frack is Crohn's". At my peak I smoked a couple boxes of cigars a months, with each surgery it's gone down. After my second surgery I was done one per week. Now after 40 years of smoking - it's down to nothing.

If it's not - then I like the idea of blind samplers (given the nature of the cigars I have in my collection - premium NC and CC - and I'd like to avoid shipping a lot of boxes). I was hoping to go out with a bang and have a raffle with one or two winners.

Hopefully an admin will see this thread and provide some input on what can be done.

Really sorry to hear about your troubles. Best of luck with your recovery. As others suggest I would break them into samplers.

I have done a few blind samplers and they have gone really smoothly.
