Well don't give up smoking while walking the dog, you never know for sure if it was that you smoked it to fast, to much humidity, or just a bad cigar. After all they are hand made and people make mistakes. Plus like you said the cigar came from somebody else so it could have gone through some bad conditions in the past.

I smoked a Baitfish while walking the dog yesterday, and that went well. I'm not going to insinuate that the cigar had a rough past considering where it came from. I'm pretty sure that it was very well taken care of in fact. No offense.

I wasn't implying it had a rough past either, just stating it could be one of many factors.

This cigar could of been saved! Tap off the ash and PURGE! Tap and light with no puffs for 20 seconds. Then start to slowly blow out all the tar while the cherry is red hot. Works most the time on sticks that have been down a while.

The experience sounds consistent with a tar buildup experience and humidity issues to me.

The kind of ash that is produced on any given cigar tells us more than just what brand it is...it tells us about where it comes from and what is going on as the cigar is burning. A black ash is indicative of nutrients in the soil that didn't quite make it into the tobacco ( minerals and chemicals ...called signatures within the area of where it was grown ) and what carries these nutrients is the moisture content. Cigars that are made in Cuba ( Remedios ) tend to produce a white ash while tobacco/cigars coming from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco produce a gray ash with white veins....so when we see a black ash we know that it had problems with how the tobacco was grown. Does this mean that "all" of the Undercrowns are like this.....no...I think you just got ahold of a bad one which is going to happen with any crop or brand as I have run into the "black ash" issue in other brands. I'm sure the next one you smoke will be fine unless you got ahold of a box of the same harvested cigars with those problems. I remember reading some time back about "ash" and what it tells the consumer and that is one of those things I will look at in the first 5 minutes of my cigar...if it is producing a black ash I just chuck it because I know the cigar is going to be a bad one.

Actually the info is found in a lot of cigar journals...you'd know that if you read something other than the back of a beer can.

If you guys are having issues with Undercrowns, I'd try to get ahold of JD and let him know about it, especially if you have a whole box of them. I bet he would more than make it right :thumbsup:

For me it was only one cigar. I have been very happy with all the rest that I have smoked, plus this was a one off. The box split of vivas I did recently are smoking very nicely. You can't make em all perfect.

You're right....tobacco is like any other plant in that you hope for the best..try to do all the right things when it comes to harvesting and fermentation but there is always going to be one that slips through the cracks. It's when things go wrong that I start looking for answers as is the thread here that was posted...we like answers for things and for some it's really interesting about how things are made. Some just want to buy the cigar and enjoy it w/o looking for anything else about it but when you look to educate yourself in anything the results are pretty much going to be worth the effort.

I didn't say anywhere that I smoked cigars with a white ash as I was commenting on the posters question. As far as you doin it wrong I don't know what to tell ya....there are different regions in Cuba just like there is in Nicaragua or Honduras as well as other countries. Each area has it's own 'signature' as to what it brings to the tobacco which is where the color of the ash is shown. According to village elders if there are multiple leaves from other regions the ash releases hallucinogenic properties...saves the natives from licking the south end of a northbound bufo frog and unicorns have been seen during these episodes.
