One of my personal... "characteristics" is that I like to research the crap out of a new hobby, create notes, etc.

For a few months, I've been using "Cigar Boss Pro" on my iPad to keep a running tally of what is in my humidor. I really like it but there are a couple of major drawbacks to it. Specifically, it doesn't maintain a history. Once I no longer have a cigar in my humi and I remove it from the app, there is no way to go back and remember what I've had.

Other than that, I like the app because it is so easy to "add" a cigar to the count because it has a huge database that I can choose from. But the inability to go back later and see what I used to have (including tasting notes) is a big issue for me.

So here is my question: for those of you who keep notes, what are you using and/or how are you doing it?

Thanks!

When I did it, I used a spreadsheet... toss it up on the cloud, and you can update it from anywhere via your phone/tablet.

I don't maintain a data base of inventory, but I do keep a Moleskin notebook handy to take notes on just about every cigar while smoking, at least at home. I use a glue stick for the labels.

It's a hobby for me and I'm very informal. I forget about cigars I have all the time. I smoke almost everything and don't keep track of shit. I used to save a band from each unique cigar but stopped because they became clutter to me. Now they just get tossed out with the ashes. I think its fun losing cigars in the humi, its like finding a $20 in a pair of pants you didn't know was in there.

Thanks Sean - there were two reasons that I didn't want to do that:

1) I wanted to pull the names of the cigars from a database instead of having to enter them manually.
2) I didn't know the information I needed (or wanted) to collect.

Now I do know what I want to record and what I don't. Plus, it seems that 40% of the time I have to add the cigar into the database anyway. So first I will check out the Cigar Geek app to see if it meets my needs and, if not, a Google Doc it will be.

Thanks for the comment!

If you don't mind, post a review of the two apps after a couple weeks of use. I have been looking into a data base, inventory, review app too and would love to hear what you think!

I love the idea of carrying a journal with me and I've tried it with other things but I always end up finding it too inconvenient and it ends up being left at home. Now that I am getting older and my eyes are not what they were when I was in my 20s, I would like to carry a 5½"×8½" journal but then I find it too big to carry around.

Can I ask, though, how often do you find yourself referring back to the notes? Part of me wonders if the ability to see past notes is something I would actually use... I do NOT want to turn the recording of cigar information into my new hobby! :crosseyed

It's only $4 so I think I will give it a try. Thanks!

I did notice that a couple of the reviewers said that you have to delete the cigar from the humidor when you're finished smoking it. That's okay with me as long as it remembers that, at one point, it was in there.

That's a great idea, thanks!

I'll also set up a spreadsheet on Google Docs and include that in the review.

It removes it from your humidor but moves it to previous smokes and saves the info

Great question... I'm about to catalogue my entire stash (by "about" to, I really mean "at some point in the future I really want to"). I'm strongly leaning towards google docs, but one thing I need to figure out is how to list cigars that I want to know how many total I have of a particular cigar, but also want to be able to denote the box code... so for example, I have fivers of 898s from 2006 and 2009 and 2013, and would like to be able to see at a glance how many total 898's I have, but also how many from each year. Haven't quite figured that out yet.

+1. Be careful with the sync between your phone and computer though, I deleted half my stash once, it was a real pain in the ass to redo it all.
