I can do 10G brews but I am not home until May. I would love to do a batch or two for the guys with a recipe that we can all agree on. I haven't used my new HERMS system (Kal Clone) yet because I built it all last summer and didn't get a chance before I left.

Or, I'd be willing to drink someone else beer (who wouldn't) hahaha

Why not do both?

Why not do both?
That is a good question haha

Either way... If BOTL comes up with a recipe and wants someone to brew a couple batches, I would be more than happy. I'll smack some labels and caps (that we come up with) on there and can ship them out to people too. I'm not a very good recipe guy (do mostly clones) so I don't know how much help I would be.

I am sure I could recruit @99TRILLS and @Smoqman to give me a hand too.

For all the guys who are following this thread but who don't have the equipment. This is a black friday special from northern brewer. It looks like you get a 5 gal kettle and 2 beer kits for the price of just the brew equipment starter kit. This will get you started doing extract beer recipes for $90. Hard to beat, in my opinion. Looks like shipping is another $20.

After that, the only thing missing is bottles, but you can get those for free from your friends and neighbors.

PS...if you do order this, you should throw in a hydrometer and test tube.

I finally got around to plugging this into brew target and I can see the mash may be problematic.

Targeting a 6.5 gal boil size, it will take most of the water for the mash, leaving very little to sparge. I'm speculating that is why the original recipe included DME. His equipment probably couldn't handle the required grain load. In all honesty, I'm not sure my mash tun will hold this much grain. Must be time for an upgrade!

I'm going to play with this some more. Maybe someone can verify what they are seeing for the mash.

This is not a problem, though. I can go to larger boil volume or drop in some DME like the original brewer. I'm going to ponder...

Late to this thread and new to brewing. I've only done two batches, but I'm going to give the chosen recipe a try sometime in the next couple months. Great idea!

Good observation @jasonsbeer I can't say if your right or not but definitely something I didn't think of. Cigar City says they brew Zhukov from first runnings like this though and claim it makes a higher quality wort. I'd run a sparge anyways and brew a brown or mild with it. No sense wasting that much grain.

Time to wake this thread up again. Are we good to do this in January?

I have ordered my ingredients from Midwest Supplies. They have 10% off and free shipping with coupon code "resolve". I ordered two US05 packets for this beer.

@Eric mentioned he has a source for bottle caps and would work with someone on the label. I am not very artsy, but I'm good at copy and paste. Anybody out there willing to offer their services on a label design? If necessary, we could recruit someone who is not a home brewer. We must have at least one art designer around here. :)

Thanks everyone! I'm looking forward to seeing your fermenters bubbling.

@Eric

I was going to brew the last two Sundays, but both days have been around zero for the high. :cold: My garage/smoking lounge/brau haus isn't heated, so that was out.

Going to try again this weekend. It is supposed to be in the low 30's. I'm doing a 5 gal batch, so I'll end up around 50 bottles. I'd love to have some of those caps! Just let me know what I owe you.

Man I can't believe I've missed this whole thread. While I haven't brewed, I have always loved beer and wanted to get into it. This makes me wish I had sooner. Can't wait to see what some of you come up with, especially it being RIS

After some run-ins with crap weather I just brewed this with my brewclub this last Saturday. We ended up with 5gal in the fermenter but it was a bit of a headache. Our refractometer was busted and wouldn't work right and my hydrometer broke so I have no clue what the OG was. Ran into a handful of other equipment snags and ended up having to double batch sparge instead of fly sparging as planned.
This reminded me why I like brewing at home with all my gear. I'm debating brewing this again at home without the distractions and the advantages of my normal rig. In any case here's a few pics....

Edit - I posted the best pic I had of the group brew and one of a little carboy action. Sorry thought I had more.

OK...I went ahead and brainstormed a label. You guys can let me know what you think. I'm open to suggestions.

@Eric - can we use the BOTL logo on this? If you have one with black print, that would work perfect.

edit: hmmm...looks like I misspelled Rasputin. I can fix that on the final.

I like the label. Looks like I won't be able to brew this until sometime in February. Which recipe did we all settle on anyway? Maybe if we could put it in the first post @StogieFisher or start a new thread with brew logs and pictures that would be great
Original recipe is here - http://www.alternativecommutepueblo.com/2009/09/2015-ris.html

Stogie's scaled version is here - http://www.botl.org/threads/homebrewers-who-is-up-for-a-botl-brew.83850/page-5#post-1731465

I agree. Would be helpful for those just now seeing the thread to get the info into the first post. Or start a new thread as Iholmes suggests.
