Welcome to the dark roast side.
Happy they made it and your enjoyingJoe @Wicket you are a gentleman and a scholar. View attachment 76762
I was taken back at first with how dark the Mexican actually tasted. With no real food to blunt the palate, it was popping with strong flavor. It is an excellent cup.

Both you and Chuck roast a great bean! Oh and I'm all in..
Roasted about a 1/2 lb of Mexican today in the hot air popper. Turned out pretty well I think.

I just roasted up a Mexican and it ended up pretty dark, not too dark but darker than the rest I've done. not sure if I like it or not though.Happy they made it and your enjoying. Funny thing is the Mexican was pulled just before it finished first crack. I almost always let it run 30 or so seconds after but you said you liked light I tried to do that haha. Great to see you joining in on roasting Dave

I have vbeen doing 1/2 pound batches. That seems to work out well for me.Well, I ordered up some raw beans from Sweet Maria's. They should be here within the week, and I'll give it a try. I'm not sure how much to do in the first batch, but it seems like it's gonna take a few trials to get it right. So I think I'll try something like 3 small batches, and take notes on them. I want to learn how to "perfect" this roasting deal. Wish me luck guys.![]()

in a Whirley Pop.Are you doing 1/2 lb at a time in the air popper?
If you are using the Nostalgia popper from Sweet Maria's use 1/3 cup per batch. About 4 batches will get you roughly 1/2 lb.Well, I ordered up some raw beans from Sweet Maria's. Sounds spot onOkay after 24 hours rest I brewed a cup of the Mexican beans in the Aeropress. I got heavy notes of brown sugar and nuttiness. There is also some maltiness. I think it is fantastic!
I'd like to clarify (just in case) that your roast level was great! I just didn't expect the dark notes that it presented at the level of roast that it was. I'm on my second cup now.. Delicious.Happy they made it and your enjoying. Funny thing is the Mexican was pulled just before it finished first crack. Very trueSo my sweet maria's popper and green beans will be here on Tuesday. I already have a few hand grinders, french press, aeropress, kettle, scales, and cold brew setup. In an effort to make sure I can completely master and enjoy my ongoing obsession with coffee I have also procured an espresso machine, new electric burr grinder, pour over setup with steel mesh filter (no paper ever touches any of my coffee), and an ibrik for the wife for turkish brew. I should now conceivably be able to source, roast, and brew nearly every type of coffee I could want. If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing! Really looking forward to diving into roasting and having full control over my coffee.
This works. I kind of imagined it like a cigar pass. Starter would put 4 .25# bags in (or whatever) and you put what you take. Keep the bags to .25# to keep the roasted stuff fresh. I don't see this staying out long enough for the fresh roast to go bad but what do i know?Guys I'm trying to plan this pass but having some issues with how we should set it up. I'm thinking I'd start the pass with 4lbs. The first person takes .25lb from each and puts 1lb or more of their favorite. This way if the box takes a bit longer the roasted beans won't go bad. It also gives the taker a chance to roast the way they want. What's your thoughts on this setup???
