Anything out there that doesn't cost an arm + leg, easy to use and provides good sound?

I've read mixed reviews on FM adaptors.

I have one of those FM adaptors. Dont waste your money, I tossed my within two weeks of having. IMO, if you spend a little more most of the time it is worth it.

FM adapters don't work well in this area, too many stations with too strong a signal.
The Lady of the House replaced the stock Honda radio with an Alpine unit that has a built-in Ipod dock cable.
She just plugs in the Ipod and keeps it in the glove compartment. The radio controls the Ipod, selects playlists, and displays artist/track names. It even charges it.
I think it was something like $200.
Your other option is to get another radio that has an AUX in jack. Lots of them do, and I've seen them at Fry's for <$100.

I use the Itrip for my Nano. The sled version. What I like about it is the USB plug on the bottom allows me to charge/power the Nano with the same car charger I use for my Blackberry.
Have that same one for the wife's nano and it works great.

What model do you have Ted?

I've got a Creative Labs Zen Micro Photo ... but my wife has been hinting that she wants a player for her birthday. I'm doing the research now on which player would be good for her.

Are car adaptors all brand specific or can they be used for different models of Mp3 players?

If the adapter uses a dock connector (like for charging, controlling playlists), then it's brand specific.
If the adapter just uses a Line-in audio jack, then it doesn't matter what brand of player you have.

They make IPod specific ones but there are ton available for other makes/models.

Well, I don't want to replace the factory stereo in our Prius (and it's CD only - no cassette), so I'll need to see what kind of adaptors might be available and go from there.

Yup, like I said if it has a dock connector cable, it's for an Ipod. But if it's just a standard line-in audio jack, any player can be used.
Both of the ones listed used line-in audio jacks, so they can be used with any player.
BTW when I said "brand" I was referring to the brand of the MP3 player, not the brand of the adapter.

If your Prius is an 06 or later there is already an audio-in jack.
Otherwise, there are adapters that patch into the cd-changer inputs that let you use a player.
http://www.coastaletech.com/04prius.htm has a bunch Prius hacks for sale too.

ah that sucks Clay

I did mine myself....wasn't hard at all. Hard wiring the ipod is the way to go. Why go from digital to radio waves.
