If your sushi tastes fishy, or even worse, smells fishy, run don't walk. This is typical of fish past its prime. It may be okay for a fish fry or cooked fish, but not acceptable for sushi or sashimi. Any respectable place will not serve suspect fish. You want to make sure that the place you frequent has the freshest fish. I cannot stress this enough.
Absolutely, you have to have a fresh product. It's not worth saving money if you are going to get sick

Hmm I've yet to try it... something about raw fish just didn't sound appetizing. Someone at work keeps trying to convince me to try it so I might take the plunge...
There's plenty of sushi out there that isn't raw fish that you could try to ease yourself into it.

Sushi is defined by the preparation of the rice, NOT the "raw fish." It just so happens, though, that most of the best sushi contains raw fish.

Had sushi and sashimi in Korea at a buffet style retuarant. Tell the chefs what you want and they made it or sliced it. I made at least 4 trips. That was my first time and look forward to doing it again. It was much better than I thought it would be!

Sushi & Sashimi are awesome. I got hooked when I wa going out with a Hawaiian chick. I can't even tell you some of the way out shit I was eating...but a lot of it you won't find in a typical sushi bar.

Ease off the Saki. It's too easy to slam a couple jugs of that down.

Saki is supposed to be served cold or at room teerature. Cedar boxes are optional. And it's more analogous to rice beer than rice wine.

I took a one day course in saki from the sommelier from Le Chanterelle who was putting togther a tasting menu.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, toro

Too expensive to have weekly for me. But I did go to a steak place for my graduation and the New York Strip was "market price"...YIKES! I didn't ask how much and let my dad take care of it :hysterica

They have a great lunch special at the place near me. Very good sushi and for 11 bucks you get: 6 pieces of sushi (usually 2 salmon, 2 yellow tail, 2 tuna) and 6 spicy tuna rolls) plus soup and salad

At one of our local sushi joints we always offer the chef behind the bar (the owner), some sake from every bottle we order.
Our bill is always mysteriously light. :scratchhe

Oh man I used to find the best sushi palces in Boston. I really miss that area.
The tuna was always outstanding.

There is a sushi restaurant on every corner in this part of the country. Good, bad and who knows...
